Russel Arnold in awe of Virat Kohli's three consecutive centuries in ODIs

One might have thought that Virat Kohli getting to 10,000 ODI runs would be a fabulous achievement in itself, but he’s already made it clear that it doesn’t stop there. The Indian skipper, touted as the greatest batsman of the modern era, had already scored two fabulous hundreds in the first two ODIs against the Windies. India are currently playing Jason Holder’s boys in a five-match ODI series at home.

Earlier this week, King Kohli as he’s now being called, marched into an elite club of batsmen who’ve scored more than 10,000 runs in ODI cricket. While playing in the 2nd ODI against the Windies in Visakhapatnam, he became the 13th man to do so, and the fifth from India to enter the club. However, what set him apart was the fact that he became the fastest cricketer to get to the five-figure in terms of innings played. He handsomely defeated batting legend Sachin Tendulkar in the race by as many as 54 innings – Tendulkar had got there in 259 innings, while Kohli did it in just 205.

A third consecutive century for the run machine

Shortly after sneaking a single and thus scoring his 10,000th ODI run, Virat Kohli went ballistic, smashing the ball out of the park at will. He remained unbeaten on 157, propelling India to 322 in the first innings. However, the total wasn’t enough for the Indians as Windies eventually enforced a thrilling tie. Nevertheless, he’d got to a staggering 37th ODI century in Vizag.

Kohli came to Pune for the fourth ODI in piping hot form. There were a few ways that the Windies bowlers could dismiss him unless Virat erred himself. But luckily for the fans who flocked to the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, he didn’t. Chasing 284 to give India an unassailable 2-0 lead, he started off cautiously but kept the scoreboard ticking with quick singles and the odd majestic boundary.

Virat achieved his third consecutive century, joining a list of batsmen with most consecutive centuries in ODIs. Kumar Sangakkara sits on top of the list with 4 back-to-back hundreds that came in early 2015. Sangakkara’s former teammate Russel Arnold was awestruck by the Indian captain’s consistency in the 50-over format, and took to Twitter to say, “It just keeps getting better and better from @imVkohli Congratulations”.
