After the success of Indian Premier League (IPL), Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) and Karnataka Premier League (KPL), Mumbai – a land known for its mass production of world-class batsmen, came up with its own franchise-based T20 league called the T20 Mumbai League – a six-team tournament organised by the Mumbai Cricket Association.

The league began on Monday with ARCS Andheri beating North Mumbai Panthers at the Wankhede Stadium. Star players like Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Abhishek Nayar and others are participating in the tournament – the tagline of which is ‘Aamhi Mumbaikar, Aamhi Cricketkar’.

Worst tagline ever?

Former India cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar was trolled online for criticising the tagline. “‘Aamhi Mumbaikar, Aamhi Cricketkar’ has the worst tagline ever. What were they thinking! Mumbai T20 league,” Manjrekar wrote on his Twitter handle on Tuesday.

The tweet did not go down well with many, because Sachin Tendulkar, ambassador of the league, is seen mouthing the slogan in a TV commercial.

“We can’t think too much about that, we see there is our god @sachin_rt who is the reason to watch the series,” one online user wrote to Manjrekar.

Dilip Vengsarkar on the T20 league

Meanwhile, former Mumbai captain and one-time chief selector Dilip Vengsakar opined that the league will attract a lot of crowds as the league progresses.

“Though the connoisseurs would prefer to watch the longer format of the game, the T20 format is here to stay with the IPL for the last decade being a huge success. The T20 league has almost hundred local Mumbai players on view and I expect bigger crowds to witness the close finishes as the league progresses,” Vengsarkar wrote for the Times of India.

The T20 Mumbai League is broadcasted on Sony Sports Network. The matches are broadcasted live on SONY ESPN and SONY ESPN HD. They are also streamed online on sonyliv.com.
