Six young players who remind us of legends

Comparisons are quite common in cricket. It is nothing new for the fans to compare their favourite cricketers with some of the legends of the game. Players from the same eras or different eras are often compared. Their style of play and stats are taken into consideration and there are various debates and discussions about the same. We have earlier witnessed players like Sachin Tendulkar being compared with legends like Sir Don Bradman. Similarly, we find some noteworthy comparisons with this generation of players as well. Here are six young, modern-day players who remind us of some of the legends of the game: 1. Prithvi Shaw – Sachin Tendulkar Prithvi Shaw batting. (Photo Source: Twitter) Sachin Tendulkar is considered as one of the greatest players to ever have played the game. There was something very special about this legend that prompted the selectors to pick him in the Indian team at just 16. Since then, there has been no looking back for this man and he holds countless records. Same is the case with the young Prithvi Shaw. He has grabbed everyone’s attention right at his school level and then people started recognising his talent more as he led India in the U-19 World Cup 2018. Shaw’s style of play is quite similar to Sachin. His cover drives and straight drives are exactly like the way Sachin plays them. People started comparing him with the legend ever since the U-19 WC. Furthermore, he continued to impress cricket fans with his performances at the IPL this year. There is still a lot to come from this youngster and will be quite exciting. 2. Kusal Perera – Sanath Jayasuriya Kusal Perera plays a shot. (Photo Source: Twitter) Sanath Jayasuriya was one of the important members who helped Sri Lanka ascend in international cricket. Although his role in the side was not defined early on in his career, he took the world by storm in 1996. Since then, Jayasuriya never ended a calendar year with a strike rate of less than 83 and more often than not, it was exceeding 100. This stat is a testimony to show how aggressive a player he was. Kusal Perera also is a fearless, audacious and a turbo-aggressive player. Right from the first ever time he has taken on the field, he kept the fans reminiscing about the legendary Sanath Jayasuriya. Kusal never likes to take the backfoot and always tries to attack the opposition. He scores at a good strike rate and his strokeplay is very similar to that of Jayasuriya. 3. Rashid Khan – Shahid Afridi Rashid Khan of the ICC World XI. (Photo by James Chance/Getty Images) Shahid Afridi is a Pakistani legend and one of the best all-rounders that nation has produced. Although not heavily reliable with the bat, Afridi can be brutal on his day. He has the ability to hit big and score quickly and had the fastest century to his name at one point in time. He was also provided Pakistan many memorable victories with the ball and can be very reliable. Rashid Khan also is somewhat of a similar player. He can provide his side with those finishes towards the end of the innings with the bat. Rashid, just like Shahid can strike the ball big and maintains good strike rates. He needs no introduction with the ball. Rashid is one of the best in the business and can be lethal with the ball and has quite some resemblance to Afridi. 4. He is one of the best bowlers the world has ever witnessed and is the second leading wicket-taker for the Proteas in Tests. Batsmen often fear him quite a lot and even the best in the business were castled by this great. He held the top spot in world cricket for quite some time and is one of the most destructive bowlers. Kagiso Rabada, who made it into the South African ranks towards the twilight of Steyn’s career just seemed to have carried his legacy forward. Kagiso was praised by the man himself, Dale Steyn on multiple occasions. Just like Dale, Rabada bowls at a great pace and is highly accurate. He has shown a lot of maturity in his short career thus far and has also outfoxed the best. 5. (Photo by Quinn Rooney/Getty Images) Glenn McGrath was a part of the great Australian team in the 2000s. McGrath wasn’t the quickest or the canniest of bowlers. However, he always looked to stick to the basics of bowling – line and length. He never tried anything fancy in his 14-year career but was highly deceptive in the air and off the pitch fetching him 563 Test wickets. Following the footsteps of McGrath is one of Australia’s key members, Josh Hazlewood. Adapting to the modern day game, Hazlewood is more of a canny customer and relies heavily on the swing. Moreover, he is known for his pinpoint accuracy and already has 151 wickets to his name in just the 40 Test matches he has played thus far. 6. Shadab Khan – Steve Smith Shadab Khan of Pakistan bats. Although he isn’t playing currently for Australia due to some unfortunate circumstances, Smith is undoubtedly an amazing batsman to watch. He has started his career as a leg-spinner and then switched to batting. But, he has just built his game up beautifully to emerge as one of the best. Shadab Khan draws similarities with Steve Smith with somewhat a similar batting stance. Furthermore, both these men bowl leg-spin and are reliable batsmen. Just like Smith, Shadab too shuffles across his crease while playing his shots and are similar in more than one way. The fans have continuously been drawing comparisons between the style of play between these two players for quite some time now but Shadab is just too humble to turn them down.
