Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan in the final Super 4 game of the 2022 Asia Cup by five wickets in Dubai to complete a routine victory in the end. Both teams made a few changes to the team ahead of the final match on Sunday at the same venue. Sri Lanka stormed into the finals with four consecutive victories, remaining unbeaten in the Super 4 stage of the tournament.

Pakistan, as they have done throughout the tournament, did not let up the fight and rocked the Sri Lankan chase by getting rid of the influential Kusal Mendis for a duck in the first over. Haris Rauf, who has had a really impressive tournament so far, scalped another two wickets in a fiery spell to put the islanders on the back foot.

It seemed like another low-scoring thriller on the cards before Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Pathum Nissanka  stitched a counterattacking 51-run stand for the fourth wicket. Although Pakistan got rid of the dangerous Rajapaksa, the damage was already done, and Nissanka scored a well-compiled half-century to calm things in the middle.

The five-time champions cruised home with skipper Dasun Shanaka playing a handy cameo to ease the pressure off the youngster batting at the other end. Pakistan missed both Naseem Shah and Shadab Khan, who were rested for the game, the latter with a minor niggle.

Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl first, quite expectedly. The Pakistani openers made a sedate start to their innings before the in-form Mohammad Rizwan fell in the fourth over to debutant Pramod Madushan. Pakistani skipper Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman consolidated but with a rather tame approach in the middle.

Babar, who has struggled in the continental tournament, got some much-needed runs under his belt but failed to kick on after a sluggish 30 off 29 deliveries. The middle-order did not come to the party for the Men in Green as the wicket of Khushdil Shah triggered a collapse. Sri Lankans threatened to restrict Babar's side under the total of 100 runs only for a counter-attacking innings from Mohammad Nawaz.

Pakistan were restricted to a below-par score of 121 runs, failing to play out their full quota of 120 deliveries. It was the spin trio of Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dhananjaya de Silva that never let the Pakistan up the ante, conceding just 60 runs in their combined 12 overs and snaring six wickets. Hasaranga was their tormentor-in-chief, scalping three wickets as he showcased why he is one of the most sought-after spinners in the shortest format of the game.
