Stats: Comparison between England and India's batting in the 2018 Pataudi Trophy

The result of the England-India Test series was decided with the way of both the teams batted having followed different methods throughout the series. India’s top order has done a fairly better job compared to that of England but it was the contribution from their No.7 and lower batsmen that cost them big time. Those capable failed to contribute in crucial situations as India regularly collapsed thus failing to hold on to and capitalize on the top order’s effort. Indian bowlers also failed to restrict the hosts despite some good work made early on. On the other hand, England were often rescued by the partnerships for the 5th and lower wicket in almost every innings. Especially, the No.8 batsman Sam Curran has made a better impact in this series than any other England player with the bat. Curran helped them set a winning target after they were seven down for 86 in Birmingham. England realized their mistake of dropping Curran in the Southampton Test where the youngster bailed them out of troubles in both the innings. Indian Batsmen vs England Batsmen in Pataudi Trophy, 2018: England and India’s openers have failed to score a fifty in this series thus far and collectively average 17.07 and 17.5 respectively. However, India’s top-order has a clear edge when compared to the hosts. India’s No.3 to No.6 batsmen collectively scored 1091 runs at an average of 35.19 with three centuries and six fifties. England’s 3 to 6 batsmen have scored only five fifty-plus scores and average only 28.57. However, India’s bottom five average 11.7 while England’s average is 27.88 which is more than the collective average of their top six. In terms of partnership runs, India and England average 28.75 and 24.14 for the opening wicket respectively. For the 2nd, 3rd and 4th wickets, India average 34.92 which is well ahead of England’s 22.95. However, the home team’s partnership average for the 5-8th wickets is 35.7 more than twice that of India’s average for 5-8 wickets.
