Stats: Kumar Sangakkara goes past Zaheer Abbas' professional career's tally

Kumar Sangakkara’s purple patch continued in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) as the Sri Lankan wicket-keeper batsman scored crucial 47 runs in his side Jamaica Tallawahs’ victory over the Trinbago Knight Riders on Wednesday after a couple of low scores (0, 12) in the first games in the tournament played in the USA.

With his innings of 47 runs, Sangakkara’s run aggregate in professional cricket career raised to 46112 runs and puts him ahead of the former Pakistan batsman Zaheer Abbas who scored 46083 runs across formats. By going ahead of Abbas, Sangakkara now finds himself among the top 20 run-getters of all time in professional cricket and only the 2nd among Asian cricketers behind Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed a total of 50192 runs in his career.

Kumar Sangakkara is currently the highest run-getter in the 2017 season across all the formats as the legendary batsman aggregated 1810 runs in the 23 matches he featured. He is the highest run-getter in each of the three formats among Sri Lankan players as he scored over 20000 and 6000 runs in first-class and Twenty20 cricket so far and is heading towards the 20000-run milestone in List A format.

With 1027 appearances across all formats, Sangakkara is already the most capped Asian player in professional cricket as his country mate, Mahela Jayawardene is the only other player from Asia to feature in over 1000 matches in their career. With Sangakkara could be seen playing at least one or two more years he might come close or can go past the Sachin’s tally given the form he has been in even after his retirement from International cricket.
