KL Rahul’s career turned upside down when he started opening for the Kings XI Punjab in the IPL. The right-hander made a mockery of quality bowling attacks. He played stupendously enough to make a strong case for himself for a selection in the national team. He didn’t return empty-handed and was rewarded with a berth in both the T20I and ODI series versus Ireland and England.

He didn’t play the first match against Ireland but was given the opportunity to show his mettle. Rahul didn’t disappoint and scored 70 runs from 36 balls. The knock also earned him the Player of the Match award. Even in India’s last T20I against the Brits, he scored 101 runs from 54 balls to help his team track down 160 runs. Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar believes that Rahul has a bright future ahead of him.

“The next big thing”- Gavaskar on Rahul

The Old Trafford in Manchester was a witness to an absolute masterclass from the Karnataka batsman. He strolled in at the fall of Shikhar Dhawan’s wicket in the very first over. He didn’t panic and maneuvered the field. As his innings went along, he came on to his own and launched an assault on the hapless English bowlers, from where he didn’t look back.

“Then came a mini-masterpiece from the bat of someone who is going to be the next big thing in Indian cricket. Right from his debut when he squared up against Mitchell Johnson on the last tour of Australia, KL Rahul has looked a class apart. The ease with which he tore into the English bowling was breathtaking and even had the Indian skipper clapping,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for The Times of India (TOI).

“What a joy it was to see India’s comprehensive win over England in the first T20 International. It was a classy performance, as one would expect of a well-oiled super car. Even where there were moments of quite, the engine purred nicely, ready to get into top gear at a moment’s notice,” the former cricketer added while praising the display of unflustered temperament by the cricketers.
