Team India decides against travelling a cook on the tour of West Indies

Team India is on a long tour to the Caribbean islands and the world knows how much we Indians love our food. Since the team was to stay in the West Indies for around seven weeks the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and particularly the new President Anurag Thakur wanted to send a ‘desi’ cook with the team. But BCCI later decided to drop the idea.

The basic reason behind the initial thought was to help the team with ‘ghar ka khaana’. It was the easy availability of good Indian food in the Caribbean that the board changed its mind.

India Today quoted a BCCI source saying, “We realized that a number of Indian food joints are now spread across most Caribbean islands. We have tied up with different joints at all the islands where the team would be playing,”

It was initially a concern since Indian cricketers in the past haven’t quite enjoyed the Caribbean cuisine and in most islands apart from Trinidad and Tobago Indian food wasn’t readily available.

Another aspect was that two of Indian players Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravichandran Ashwin are vegetarians. To ensure they also get good food BCCI’s general manager MV Sridhar deputed to finalize deals with local food joints in the West Indies. They also did the food sampling before finalizing things.

The food joints that the BCCI tied up with were also instructed to maintain the highest level of hygiene and sanitation standards along with that for the food.

A grilling series awaits Team India and skipper Virat Kohli, they are sure to enjoy the Indian taste of curry and butter chicken though they will have to adjust without their personalized menus.
