Heading into the 2nd ODI against England, MS Dhoni needed 33 runs to become the first Indian wicketkeeper-batsman to score 10,000 runs in the format. He has been around the mark for a while not getting enough opportunities to bat as the Indian top order did the job for them more often than not. However, the team needed him to deliver in the second ODI but by the time he got in the battle was almost lost and his slow-paced knock didn’t help the cause.

Dhoni, when he took a single against Liam Plunkett in the 43rd over, got to the individual score of 33 and with that, he entered the 10k club. Here are his accomplishments – he became the fifth fastest batsman in terms of innings to get to the mark, the second wicketkeeper-batsman to achieve the feat. Dhoni is only the fourth Indian to score 10,000 runs after Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. In terms of the number of balls a player faced to pile up that many runs, he is the second fastest only behind Sanath Jayasurya.

While most names that feature on the list are top order players, he is the only player to have batted at No.5 and lower in the company of all the famous openers from around the world.

After 320 One-Day Internationals, Dhoni has 10,000* runs in his career at an average of 51.55, his best score in 50-overs cricket is 183 that he scored against Sri Lanka in Jaipur back in 2005 when he was known for his swashbuckling style of batting. He has 10 hundreds to his name in the format along with 67 fifties and a career strike rate of 88.

The former Indian captain is best known as one of the greatest finishers and among the legends to have played a limited-overs cricket match. He won Team India matches from improbable situations and trophies against opponents and in tournaments, they’d seldom won before. He also captained the Indian team to a lot of success the pinnacle of which was the World Cup 2011 victory.

Here is how Twitterati reacted to Dhoni achieving the feat:
