There was a lot of confusion ever since the news of Ravi Shastri being appointed as the head coach of the Indian team was circulated by various news portals. A lot of people were delighted with the former director’s appointment and a few frowned as the CAC had to bow down to Kohli’s demands. Later, it was learned that there was no official announcement by the BCCI yet hence the news was false.

As per the PTI, BCCI had cleared the air about the announcement of the coach by saying that the CAC is still deliberating over it. The media jumped the queue and spread the news of Shastri’s appointment much to the delight of the Indian fans. Given his popularity amongst the team member especially Kohli, Shastri is likely to eventually take the position. The CAC interviewed Shastri and five others in Mumbai on Monday.

Sourav Ganguly had spoken to the CoA about delaying the announcement until he discusses the prospective candidates with Kohli though the CoA wanted the CAC to make the announcement on Tuesday itself. As things stand at the moment, India might head to the shores of Sri Lanka without a head coach.

Sources say that the CAC was very impressed with Virender Sehwag in the interview but it is likely that anyone else will get the job apart from Shastri. The 55-year old produced decent results as a team director before he was edged out by Anil Kumble last year as CAC liked the former leg-spinner’s presentation and vision for Indian cricket. That Kumble and Kohli did not get along well which led to the former’s resignation, was never imagined last year.

The CAC – Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman – are taking measures to avoid another tussle or miscommunication between the captain and the coach by taking their time in announcing the name of the selected candidate.

By the end of this week, though, the head coach position should not be vacant as CAC, after meeting Kohli, will announce the candidate who will take India into the World Cup in 2019.
