Brakes were finally applied on the Chittagong Vikings’ stupendous run in the BPL 2019. Twin centuries from Alex Hales and Rilee Rossouw, which were a delight to watch, was the kind of effort that was required to stop the Vikings. The Rangpur Riders have added an extremely important win to their tally as they get one step closer to the playoffs.

A brilliant 48-ball 78 from Yasir Ali wasn’t sufficient to save the game for the Chittagong Vikings. Mashrafe Mortaza was the pick of the bowlers for the winning team with three wickets. The Riders now have five wins in the tournament and have ascended up to the third spot on the points table.

Absolute carnage in Chittagong

After they were put into bat first, the Rangpur Riders were rocked back early as Chris Gayle departed for just 2 runs. Rilee Rossouw joined hands with Alex Hales in the middle at this point and it was a carnage straightaway. These batsmen, two of the cleanest hitters of the cricket ball, unleashed at their full potential.

They tonked the bowlers to all corners of the ground and there was no respite by any means. Hales reached his century in just the 15th over of the innings. While he looked all set for a massive score, he was unfortunate to have got out the very next ball as he mistimed a pull horribly. Rossouw, who was playing the anchor till then, decided to shift gears and reached the triple figures in the 20th over of the game. The Rangpur Riders finished with a humungous total of 239 in 20 overs.

Always a tough chase

Chasing 240 runs was never going to be easy and the Vikings batters definitely felt the heat. Although there were glimpses of brilliance here and there, no one could really persist. Yasir Ali was the lone warrior for the team and scored 78 runs off 48 balls. The team put up a total of 167 runs in 20 overs but still fell short by 72 runs.

Twitterati was awestruck watching Alex Hales and Rilee Rossouw in action. This is the first time in the history of six seasons of BPL that two batsmen struck centuries in the same innings. It was a sad moment for the Chittagong Vikings fans as the successful winning run finally came to an end. The Vikings will be back in action again today against the Rajshahi Kings.
