UAE T20X: Eoin Morgan pens down a deal as an icon player
He is the third icon player to be signed with the organisers still needing a couple more cricketers.
England’s limited-overs skipper Eoin Morgan is the newest sensation to join the inaugural edition of the UAE T20 league. The tournament is all set to commence on December 19 and will be played until January 11 in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Earlier, the T20 specialists, Andre Russell and David Miller were also signed up to feature in the competition and the organisers will be looking for a couple more icon cricketers before the players’ drafts take place.
It will be a five-franchise tournament and Morgan, being an icon player, will feature in one of those teams. He has revolutionised England’s limited-overs fortunes by leading them since the 2015 World Cup debacle. The explosive left-hander led his team to the final ICC World T20 in 2016 which held in India and is now being tipped to lead them to the World Cup victory next year at home.
Morgan signs a huge deal
Eoin Morgan has signed a lucrative deal of worth £270,000 (equivalent to Rs 2.5 Crore) to be a part of the UAE T20 league according to Daily Mail. The deal also includes some promotional work of the league for the cricketer. The organisers are not leaving any stone unturned in their preparations as they have roped in AB de Villiers as the brand ambassador of the competition.
The time-frame of the league has caused problems for the Big Bash franchises as well. They are unable to complete their squads with the overseas players waiting for the imminent auction to take place. There is a hope that the players will be able to rake in more money in the limited days. Mostly, a typical contract for a foreign player in the Big Bash League (BBL) is worth £100,000 for the full season.
The details are still in the planning stage of the UAE’s new league with the team names yet to be finalised as well. However, its schedule is directly pitched against the BBL with the Australian league starting from December 19 as well.
