India are the two-time champions in the World Cup, having won the event in 1983 and 2011 respectively. Albeit they bowed out of the tournament last time around in 2015 after their defeat against home team Australia in the semi-finals, a lot would be expected of the Men in Blue in the upcoming edition of the 50-overs mega event.

However, the World Cup is scheduled to start after a few days from the conclusion of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL). Hence, a lot of players are most likely to back out from the T20 event. Recently, it has been learned that Virat Kohli, the Indian captain, wants his team’s fast bowlers to skip the IPL and take some rest ahead of the World Cup.

There were a lot of suggestions

It means that the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and a few others may not be a part of the event in India. Nevertheless, no final decision has been taken as per reports in Indian Express. The Indian team also suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should compensate the players who would not be participating in the T20 tournament.

The discussion took place during a meeting, involving Committee of Administrators (CoA) members Vinod Rai, Diana Edulji. It was also attended by Virat, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravi Shastri and MSK Prasad. “There were a lot of suggestions, with the players sharing their views, but no decision was taken on this. It will be taken at the appropriate time, if needed,” a source mentioned.

The World Cup is scheduled to get underway on May 30 and India will play their first match against South Africa at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton on Wednesday, June 5. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) can be affected by Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar’s absence respectively.
