‘We are heading in the right direction’ – Kraigg Brathwaite happy with West Indies’ performance after series draw against Sri Lanka

Kraigg Brathwaite, the West Indies Test skipper, sounded confident after his team drew the two-match Test series 0-0 against Sri Lanka. The right-hander was adjudged the Player of the Match in the final game at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium after he got scores of 126 and 85 respectively.

In the first Test, Brathwaite scored three and 23, but he was able to make amends. Even as he wished for the Caribbean team to win, he stated that they are going in the “right direction”. Brathwaite was delighted with how the pacers performed and with the team’s never-give-up attitude.

He put forth his opinions in the post-match presentation ceremony. “We would have liked to win, but I was very happy with the attitude we had and the discipline. Very happy with the fast bowlers’ effort. We didn’t give up; we need to keep going from strength to strength,” Brathwaite told.

“For me, it’s all about discipline. We have shown that in the back-to-back series, we can be consistent. South Africa, potentially next series, they are a good team, we need to have different pans. We are heading in the right direction,” he stated.

Brathwaite was satisfied after he was able to fulfill his responsibilities as the captain. “As a leader of the team, you want to lead from the front. Happy to get those two scores. I wanted to keep it simple, made sure I had a solid plan and backed it 100 percent.

“I could change at times; I always play to the situation of the game. I am pretty confident that I could score at whatever rate I choose to. Very happy; it was a good pitch,” Brathwaite added.

In the last day’s play, the Lankans needed 348 runs and West Indies required 10 wickets to win. However, due to rain interruptions, only 70 overs were possible on the day. The hosts, on the backs of half-centuries from Dimuth Karunaratne and Oshada Fernando, drew the game.

As far as the West Indies are concerned, earlier, they also won the two-match Test series against Bangladesh 2-0 under Brathwaite’s leadership.  The likes of Kyle Mayers and Nkrumah Bonner showed their class that time around.
