Bangladesh made an impressive start to their campaign in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. The team, led by Tamim Iqbal, came out trumps by 33 runs to take an all-important 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Their batters put up a competitive score of 257 after which the spinners pushed the Lankans back.

Despite a valiant effort from Wanindu Hasaranga, with the bat in hand, Lanka fell short. Kusal Perera, in his maiden stint as the Lankan skipper, had his difficulties, both from the leadership and batting front. He played at a strike rate of 60 over a course of 50 balls and hit only one four.

Their bowlers also lacked bite, especially in the middle over. As far as the Tigers are concerned, half-centuries from Tamim, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmudullah Riyad guided them to a respectable score. Thereafter, it was Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s four-fer with support from the other bowlers that rocked Lanka.

The second ODI is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 25 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur and it’s a must-win affair for the Lankans to stay alive in the series. For the Tigers, after a series of losses earlier, they will be looking to pocket the series in the very next match.

Playing combination for BAN vs SL

Bangladesh

Left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman seemed to have sustained an injury after he fell over in his run-up. If he doesn’t play, Shoriful Islam could well get a chance. Taskin Ahmed was a tad expensive last time and he couldn’t pick up a wicket either.

The right-arm pacer will be keen to find his rhythm. Opening batsman, Liton Das needs to find his rhythm as well along with Mohammad Mithun, who bagged a golden duck last time around.

Shakib Al Hasan will also want to be a tad cautious after he threw his wicket away to Danushka Gunathilaka. The onus will also be on Tamim, Mushfiqur, and Mahmudullah to shepherd the Tigers.

Predicted XI

Tamim Iqbal (C), Liton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Soumya Sarkar/Mohammad Mithun, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah Riyad, Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mohammad Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman/Shoriful Islam

Bench: Mohammad Mithun/Soumya Sarkar, Shoriful Islam/Mustafizur Rahman, Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, Mahedi Hasan

Sri Lanka

The Lankans might bring in spinner Akila Dananjaya for the next game, keeping in mind the spin-friendly playing conditions. Dananjaya de Silva picked three wickets and was the standout among the tweakers.

Lakshan Sandakan, on the other hand, needs to be a bit more accurate regarding lines and lengths. Wanindu Hasaranga was impressive with the bat, but the fact that he didn’t get a wicket in helpful conditions can be a tad concerning.

Isuru Udana will also want to improve on his performance. Most importantly, Lanka’s middle-order needs to step up after a horrendous show last time around. Sri Lanka need to use their batting depth to a good advantage.

Predicted XI

Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Perera (C and WK), Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, Dananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Isuru Udana, Akila Dananjaya/Ashen Bandara, Dushmantha Chameera, Lakshan Sandakan

Bench: Ramesh Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella, Ashen Bandara/Akila Dananjaya, Asitha Fernando, Chamika Karunaratne, Shiran Fernando, Binura Fernando
