5 New rules that can make Test cricket more interesting
After almost 140 years of Test cricket, we have a format which intriguing and interesting for the traditionalists. But what more can be done to add a bit more flavour to it?
5. Stump mic commentary
In the 2018-19 Australia-India Test series down under, we heard Tim Paine having a banter with the Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant. That banter continued when Paine was batting as Pant called him a ‘temporary captain.’ These kind of mini-battles make Test cricket a bit more interesting for the fans watching it.
The thing about that conversation was that the broadcasters were allowed to increase the stump mic’s volume whenever a spinner was bowling. The wicketkeeper was up to the stumps and would often be heard cheering his teammates or telling the batsman to go for the shot. The stump mic in general adds a lot more fun to the watching experience.
Apart from the banter, there are other sounds on the ground which give us a feel of how things would be at the ground. There are several sounds that can be heard, such as the grunt of the fast-bowler after bowling, the ball meeting the bat’s sweet spot, and several other things. These sounds can truly enhance the way we see cricket and make Test cricket a bit more interesting.
