The Mumbai Indians (MI) have had a sorrow start to their IPL 2022 campaign with no wins in four appearances. The team has not been able to deliver a perfect performance in both the departments of the game and is lacking the potency of the last few editions. They are currently ninth in the points table. The primary reason for them being in the last position in the points table of this edition is due to the absence of key players, who had done well for the team in the last three-four editions. These players had a direct impact on the overall performance of the team and helped the team to taste success on more occasions than failures. Quinton de Kock Quinton de Kock. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The wicket-keeper batter from South Africa made his debut for MI in the 2019 edition, after being traded by Royal Challengers Bangalore. He immediately made an impact in the tournament, smashing 529 runs in 16 innings, and emerged as the third-highest run-scorer as well. Quinton’s overall performance helped MI to secure their fourth title in the IPL history. In the following edition, he notched up 503 runs in 16 innings and returned as the sixth highest run-scorer in the tournament, again being one of the reasons, why MI became only the second team to defend their title in the tournament. In the 2021 edition, Quinton de Kock garnered 297 runs in 11 innings and had an average season, while the team also failed to seal the playoffs spot. In this edition, he is plying his trade for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and has accumulated 188 runs in five innings, so far. 4. Rahul Chahar Rahul Chahar. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The leg-spinner Rahul Chahar was bought by the Mumbai franchise in the IPL 2018 auction. However, he could not find an opportunity to showcase his talent that year. But after getting a spot in the MI playing XI in the 2019 edition, he cemented his spot and scalped a total of 13 wickets in as many appearances. In the 2020 edition, Chahar picked up 15 wickets in as many matches, and then followed it up with another successful season by taking 13 wickets in 11 matches of IPL 2021. Hence, Chahar was one of the finest bowlers to help MI clinch titles in 2019 and 2020. Rahul Chahar was Punjab Kings at the auction and the youngster has already made a mark. He has contributed 34 runs and scalped seven wickets in four matches. Mumbai, on the other hand, have roped in Murugan Ashwin and Mayank Markande but they are yet to reap dividens. 3. Trent Boult Faf du Plessis and Trent Boult. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The MI team management acquired the services of Kiwi fast bowler Trent Boult ahead of the 2020 season. Boult made an immediate impact, picking up a total of 25 wickets in 15 appearances and was the third-highest wicket-taker of the tournament. In the 2021 edition, Boult scalped 13 wickets in 14 matches and had an average outing with the ball, as compared to the previous edition. But in these two years, he paired up with Jasprit Bumrah to pick wickets in the powerplay overs and help MI maintain optimum pressure on the opposition to win the matches. In the 2022 edition, Boult is playing for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and has already bagged seven wickets in four matches. In the recent outing for RR against Lucknow Super Giants, he finished with figures of 2/30. 2. Krunal Pandya Krunal Pandya. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Krunal Pandya has stepped up to task be it bat or ball whenever Mumbai Indians have been in trouble. In 2016, he made his debut for the franchise and scored 237 runs. Krunal’s best-ever performance came in the 2017 edition, where he garnered 243 runs and picked up 10 wickets. In the finals against Rising Pune Supergiant, the all-rounder from Baroda contributed 47 off 38 balls to help the MI team to win their third title in the tournament’s history. In the last few editions, he had been average with the bat, but was economical in the middle-overs and managed to pick wickets as well. In this edition, Krunal is currently playing for Lucknow Super Giants and has scored 68 runs and picked up three wickets in five matches. 1. Hardik Pandya Hardik Pandya. (Photo: Sandip Mahankal/IANS) One of the finest all-rounders in the country, Hardik Pandya was certainly the heartbeat of the Mumbai Indians since his debut in 2015. His performances in both the departments helped the team ace crucial moments, ranging from providing a late flourish in the final overs and picking up wickets in the middle overs. In the 2019 edition, Hardik had scored 402 runs and picked up 14 wickets, and returned as the biggest match-winner of the team in their title win. He then followed it up with 281 runs in 14 innings in the next edition and was one of the reasons for Mumbai’s fifth title victory. In the 2022 edition, Hardik is the leader of the Gujarat Titans team and has garnered 91 runs and picked up two wickets in three matches.
