Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan gave a ‘pat on the back’ to India women’s team skipper Mithali Raj for her apt response to a reporter earlier this week. On the eve of the Women’s World Cup, a reporter asked Mithali who her favourite male cricketer was during the opening dinner and media round-table event.

The leading run scorer for India in the sport, however, came up with a snappy response, which the reporter clearly did not expect. “Do you ask the same question to a male cricketer? Do you ask them who their favourite female cricketer is?” she asked the scribe in retaliation.

“I have always been asked who’s your favourite cricketer but you should ask them who their favourite female cricketer is,” she added, lamenting the lack of recognition for women’s cricket, despite representing the country in its most popular sport.

Social media was all for her courageous response and came out in support of the Indian captain. Amitabh Bachchan, or Big B as he more popularly known, tweeted, “shabash…!!!” to praise the way Mithali Raj retorted at the question.

Furthermore, Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon also lauded Raj for her response by tweeting, “Well done! #salute.”

Mithali Raj breaks a world record

Team India is currently on their biggest assignment of the year, which is the Women’s World Cup in England. India kicked off their World Cup campaign in style, defeating hosts England convincingly by 35 runs. The openers provided a solid start for India in the first innings, stitching an opening wicket partnership of 144 runs. Skipper Mithali Raj herself added 71 and was dismissed off the final ball of the innings.

Mithali, in fact, smashed her 7th consecutive fifty in women’s ODI cricket, which became a new world record. She also holds the record for the most number of international fifties by a female cricketer, having struck 47 of them over 18 years in the circuit.

Chasing 281, England lost wickets at regular intervals, with Deepthi Sharma striking three times for India. They eventually registered a comfortable victory and gained 2 valuable points.
