Australia vs India, 2018-19: 1st Test, Day 1 – Statistical Highlights

India would be disappointed with the score of 250/9 at stumps on day 1 in Adelaide after electing to bat first in not so threatening conditions for the batsmen. Some poor shot selection by the top-order reduced them to 41/4. However, Cheteshwar Pujara put one some crucial partnerships with the middle and lower-order batsmen to take India past 200. The No.3 batsman scored 123 off 246 balls which included seven fours and two sixes before getting run out on what turned out to be the last ball of day one.

Cheteshwar stands tall:

1 – Cheteshwar Pujara is the first Indian to score a century on the opening day of a Test series in Australia. Overall, his century is the 7th by an Indian on the opening day of a Test series outside Asia.

6 – Pujara is the 6th Indian to score at least one century in England, Australia and South Africa. Mohammad Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli are the other five players.

108 – Number of innings he needed to complete 5000 runs in Test cricket. He is the joint 5th fastest among Indian players to reach the milestone. Pujara also completed 14000 runs in his first-class career during this innings.

123 – His 123 is the 3rd highest score by a visiting player on the opening day of a Test series in Australia. Sir Gary Sobers scored 132 in the 1960 Brisbane Test while England’s Maurice Leyland made 126 in the 1936 Brisbane Test.

Not the start India wanted:

41 – The 41 runs India made before losing their first four wickets is their lowest score at the fall of the 4th wicket in the opening innings of an away Test series. The previous lowest India aggregated for the first four wickets in the opening innings of an away Test series was 45 in the 1962 Port of Spain Test against Windies which was a five-match series.

Ro-Hits and misses:

3 – Rohit Sharma has been dismissed by Nathan Lyon in all three innings in Test cricket he played at the Adelaide Oval. Overall, Rohit has got out to Lyon on four instances in this format; the most against any bowler.

8 – Number of sixes Rohit has hit in Test cricket in Australia. These are the joint-most Test sixes hit by any player for India in Australia. Virender Sehwag also hit eight Test sixes for India in Australia but his over tally is nine in this country including one six he hit for the ICC World XI in the 2005 Super Test.

Sixes and more sixes:

7 – The six sixes hit during the Indian innings are the most for them in a Test innings in Australia. They hit five sixes in the first innings of the 2003 Boxing Day Test match at the MCG in which all the five sixes came off Virender Sehwag’s bat.

Among the visiting sides, only two others have hit seven or more sixes in a Test innings in Australia. South Africa hit nine sixes in their 2nd innings of the 2016 Perth Test while England also hit seven in their second innings of the 2014 Sydney Test.

200 – The six Rohit Sharma hit before getting out was the 200th six in Test cricket conceded by Nathan Lyon. Thus, the Australian spinner became the first player to concede 200 sixes in this format. Muttiah Muralitharan (195) has conceded the second most number of sixes in Test cricket.

India bats first after a long time:

1991 – Last time India batted first in the opening game of a Test series in Australia was way back in 1991/92. The hosts batted first in the first match of all the previous five Test series against India.

This was also the first time since 2001 that India have batted first in the first match of a Test series against Australia. The Aussies batted first in the first game of all the previous nine Test series against India.

A rare failure for Kohli:

3 – For the first time in nine innings across all formats, Virat Kohli got out for a single-digit score at the Adelaide Oval. In the four Test innings before this game, Kohli scored 116, 22, 115 and 141. The Indian captain recorded his highest T20I score of 90* at this venue and recorded scores of 18, 15, 107 in ODIs.
