Pakistan and mis-communication resulting in run-outs have an ethereal relation over the years. However, in their opening Test against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi, they were in the right side of things. The hosts managed to inflict the run-out of Abu Jayed Rahi, who pretty much had no clue about proceedings in the middle. The dismissal also pulled the curtains down on the Tigers’ innings.

The run-out took place in the dying stages of the opening day’s play. In the 83rd over, Jayed had the brain-fade while facing left-arm fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi. The pacer churned out a good length delivery and Rahi bunted the leather to Mohammad Abbas at mid-on. Rahi thought about going for a sharp single, but then backed out. Non-striker Ebadot Hossain made his crease.

Meanwhile, Abbas tried to throw the stumps down at the striker’s end. And he was successful in doing so. Thereafter, the Pakistan cricketer appealed in unison. The on-field umpires weren’t sure and they referred the same to the third-umpire. In the replays, it was seen that Jayed, somehow, forgot to ground his bat. He had ample time of getting back, but was caught day-dreaming.

Tigers find the going tough

After being put in to bat first, the Tigers got off to a horrendous start. Tamim Iqbal and debutant Saif Hassan got out in the single digits inside the first two overs. From there on a number of their batsmen got into the 20s, 30s and 40s, but most of them threw their wickets away after promising. Mohammad Mithun was the only batter, who looked in putting his head down for a big score.

He got to his second Test fifty off 137 balls and went on to score 63 runs with seven fours and a six. Naseem Shah accounted for his wicket after the DRS showed an inside edge of Mithun’s willow. Bangladesh were bowled out for 233 in 82.5 overs. For Pakistan, Afridi was the most successful with four wickets. Mohammad Abbas and left arm spinner Haris Sohail got rid of a couple of batters each.
