The last few months have been really remarkable for Shaheen Shah Afridi as far as his personal performance in international cricket is concerned. The highly-rated pacer truly marked his arrival in international cricket in this year’s World Cup with some sensational spells. After being initially benched, he was brought into the playing eleven midway through the tournament and truly justified the faith shown in him.

He picked 1/54 against South Africa before returning figures of 3/28 against New Zealand. Against Afghanistan, he picked up 4/47. He then capped off the competition with a historic spell of 6/35 against Bangladesh. His figures against Bangladesh are the best bowling figure by any Pakistani in World Cup history. The youngster also became the youngest to take a five-wicket haul in World Cups.

And earlier this week, he took his first five-wicket haul in Tests in the ongoing second Test against Sri Lanka in Karachi. He picked up 5 wickets for 77 runs as Pakistan bowled out Sri Lanka for 271. Earlier in the match, Pakistan were all out for 191. And it was Shaheen Afridi’s spell that helped the hosts to stop the Islanders from running away with the match.

Controversy for Shaheen Shah Afridi

But the memorable day ended on a controversial note for Shaheen as he made a very objectionable comment while addressing the media after the day’s play. The bowler tried to have some fun at the expense of a journalist but perhaps crossed the fine line. When the journalist asked Shaheen Afridi a question, the pacer told him, “Please throw some light on yourself so that I can see you clearly.”

The journalist was understandably miffed with the left-arm pacer. He later released a video, demanding a public apology from the bowler for the comment. The journalist also warned Shaheen that he would drag him to court if he does not issue an apology.

Here is a video showing the incident as well as the journalist’s remaks:

Pakistan, meanwhile, have taken full command of the ongoing game. Riding on centuries from openers Shan Masood and Abid Ali, the hosts ended the day on 411 for 2. They now lead the visitors by 331 runs. The first game of the series ended in a drab draw due to poor weather.
