The Indian team has been going through a rich vein of form in international cricket. They lost the Test series against South Africa, however, managed to comprehensively humble the hosts in the ODI and T20I series. They outplayed the Proteas in all departments and emerged victorious for their maiden series victories in the Rainbow nation.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah have cemented their place in the team on the backs of some stupendous performances. They have managed to restrict the oppositions and subsequently have been showered with praises from the cricketing fraternity. However, Bharat Arun, the Indian bowling coach has enacted a significant role in the development of the bowling development.

He is currently focusing on creating a pool of pacers who will be backups for Bhuvi and Bumrah eyeing the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England and Wales. The coach recently spoke to the media about India’s plans regarding churning out at least three backups and also mentioned the upcoming triangular series as an opportunity to test the reserve fast bowlers.

The need for quality pacers

“Yes, the Sri Lanka T20 Tri-series will give us ample opportunity to test the bench strength of our pace bowling unit. We have two world-class operators in Bhuvi and Bumrah but we have also created a good pool. The pacers (Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Jaydev Unadkat) who are going to Sri Lanka will be looking forward to grabbing the opportunity,” Arun iterated.

Arun also mentioned injuries to players as the main reason for developing strong backups. “Since we have a long season ahead, we have to be ready for any injury or fitness issues. Shardul Thakur has come up nicely and done well in South Africa also. Even (Mohammed) Shami and Umesh (Yadav) are very much in contention as they will be playing the Deodhar Trophy (for India A and B, respectively),” he added.
