MS Dhoni was an indispensable member of the Indian cricket team ever since he made his debut way back in 2004 against Bangladesh in Chattogram. In 2007, he got the taste of captaining the national side for the first time in the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa. And he passed with flying colours, captaining the Men in Blue to glory, beating Pakistan in the final in Johannesburg.

Soon after, he took over as the ODI and Test skipper as well. There was no dull moment when Dhoni was weaving magic on the field. In 2011, he captained India to victory in the World Cup. Against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Dhoni ‘finished things off in style’ with a six off Nuwan Kulasekara and it remains to be one of the iconic shots in the game of cricket until now.

However, from now onwards, the world won’t be witnessing the Ranchi boy ever in national colours. On Saturday, August 15, the veteran decided to hang his boots from the highest level. Back in July 2019, Dhoni last played for India in the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. At the Old Trafford in Manchester, he scored 50, but India lost the match to crash out of the mega event.

To announce his retirement, Dhoni’s didn’t call for a press conference. In fact, he chose India’s 74th Independence Day, maybe bearing in mind that the media won’t be active. Dhoni dropped a post on his Instagram handle to bid adieu to cricket. In the video, his journey from 2004 to 2019 can be seen. In the background the song, ‘Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hu’ can be heard.

He will next be seen, playing for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The tournament starts on September 19 and the fans will be eager to see India’s favourite son step on the field.

In the meantime, the Indian film industry didn’t forget to laud Dhoni on his career as well. From Farhan Akhtar, Anupam Kher to Yami Gautam, a number of renowned names congratulated him on what was a stupendous journey.
