The first qualifier turned out to be a thrilling encounter at the Wankhede stadium. The Chennai Super Kings managed to book a place in the final of the IPL for the seventh time. As for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, they stand another chance to play the finals. They now face the winner of the Eliminators in Qualifier 2.

In what was a low scoring game, CSK managed to pull off the run chase after being 62/6 at one stage. Man of the match Faf Du Plessis played a wonderful match-winning knock of 67(42)*. Batting alongside Harbhajan Singh and Deepak Chahar, he created a pathway for a CSK victory.

Shardul Thakur’s late cameo helped the team’s cause as Du Plessis finished it off in style. He hit a straight six to Bhuvneshwar Kumar on the first ball of the last ball as he roared in celebration. The Chennai players ran from the dugout to congratulate him as it was a sensational fightback from them.

Former Aussie cricketer Brett Lee was highly impressed by Chennai Super Kings’ fantastic comeback. In a position of a probable loss to ending up as winners and booking a place in the finals, the Chennai franchise displayed some great valour. Lee took to Twitter in order to laud the team.

Here’s what he tweeted:-

“Well played @ChennaiIPL ! What a game. Awesome to watch the comeback”

Earlier in the day, the Sunrisers Hyderabad were off to a horrid start as Shikhar Dhawan was dismissed cheaply in the first over. The wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. It was Carlos Brathwaite’s knock which kept SRH in the reckoning. They managed to score a total of 139/7.

Chennai Super Kings were in a spot of bother quite early. Shane Watson was dismissed for a duck. Siddharth Kaul later had both Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu back in the dugout off consecutive balls. Rashid Khan bowled a gem of a delivery to get rid of MS Dhoni.

However, that’s when Du Plessis stepped up and the rest is history. The Chennai Super Kings thus enter the final of this year’s IPL. It was a matter of pride for the Chennai fans. Having missed the tournament due to a two-year ban, they’re back with a bang and just one step away from attaining the IPL title for a record third time.
