The 15th edition of the IPL in 2022 sees BCCI reverting to the format that they used in IPL 2011. The ten teams have been divided into two groups of five. Each team will play 14 games in the group stage – facing the other four teams in their group two times, four teams in the other group once, and the remaining team twice.
The determination of the groups and who plays whom across the groups once and twice was done on the basis of the number of titles followed by the number of final matches played by the respective teams.

With regards to the IPL points table, the team winning a match will be awarded 2 points. The team that loses the game is to be awarded no points. In the scenario of an abandoned match or a no result, both teams will be awarded one point each.
In case of teams being tied on the points table, the higher number of wins will be considered. However, if the wins are equal then the net run rate (NRR) will come into play. NRR is based on the margin of a team’s victory or defeat and is adjusted accordingly post each game.
Despite there being two groups, there only will be one points table. The teams that finish amongst the top 4 at the end of the league stage, will qualify for the playoffs with the other six teams being eliminated. Meanwhile, the teams to finish in the top 2 on the table will get an extra shot at playing the finals by playing Qualifiers 1 and 2.
The winner of Qualifier 1 will go into the finals while the losing team plays Qualifier 2. The 3rd and 4th placed teams will get only one match, the Eliminator, with the winner going into Qualifier 2 and the loser being knocked out of the tournament.
