The shortest format of the game gained popularity quickly over the last few years as compared to the other two forms. The increasing leagues around the world have shifted the focus of the fans who love to watch the 40 overs of action instead of spending a whole day waiting for the result. Moreover, the players like Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum have endorsed the game in the best possible manner with the way they bat in T20 cricket. The former, however, has named the best player in the format ever since it has come into the limelight.

Team India won the inaugural edition of the World T20 back in 2007 which probably was the best thing to happen to the format. The popularity increased in the country which also led to the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) the very next year to take it to the next level. As it stands now, almost every Test playing nation has its own T20 league and even the T20 specialist players are earning big by playing across the world in such leagues.

Who is the greatest ever?

Chris Gayle, while speaking to Delhi Times, has claimed him to be the greatest T20 cricketer ever. He feels that there is still a debate about who is the best ODI and Test player but there is no debate when it comes to the shortest format which is the reason he is also known as the Universe Boss.

“Don’t remember the things that you have done in the other two formats.’ But now that I think about it, they say Chris Gayle is the best T20 player ever. That’s what they say, right? There is no debate in T20 cricket about who is the best player. There is a debate in Test cricket and ODI cricket. That’s why I’m the Universe Boss, I’m the greatest!” Gayle said with a smile on his face.

In a way, Gayle’s claims couldn’t be overlooked as he has proved time and again with his batting. 175 is the highest score in the format and it has been notched up by none other than the Jamaica-born cricketer and moreover, his strike rate of close to 150 after playing a whopping 336 T20 matches justifies that he is the greatest player in the format.
