IPL 2023: Team-wise one overseas player who might be benched for whole season

The recently-concluded IPL 2023 mini-auction saw many teams making some valuable additions to their final squads for the 16th edition of the cash-rich tournament. While some teams made aggressive bids and roped in some top-class players by spending a fortune on them, the others played it smartly and made noteworthy purchases roping in seasoned Indian as well as overseas players and also welcoming uncapped players on board. While the likes of the overseas recruits including Sam Curran, Ben Stokes and Cameroon Green made merry as the highest-paid players, it is a no-brainer that they will surely get to play the maximum number of matches in the 2023 edition. However, there are also some foreign players who might have to warm the bench this time around due to tough competition or lack of form. Without further ado, here’s a look at- Overseas players who might warm the bench in IPL 2023 1. Chennai Super Kings- Kyle Jamieson Tall New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson was roped in by the Chennai Super Kings for INR 1 crore which is a massive INR 14 crore pay cut from his previous auction fees in 2021 where he had represented the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Jamieson had an unimpressive season as he could only manage nine scalps to his name from as many matches at an economy of 9.61. Notably, the Auckland cricketer who had backed out of the IPL 2022 mega auction has not played a single T20I since March 2021 and therefore, he could be warming the bench for the 2023 season. 2. Delhi Capitals-Lungi Ngidi South African pacer Lungi Ngidi was one of the Delhi Capitals’ retentions for IPL 2023. He was bought by the franchise at his base price of INR 50 lakh at the 2022 mega auction. However, the tall speedster who was drafted from CSK to DC did not get to feature in even a single match in the 2022 season as he warmed the bench throughout the tournament. Thus, with a stiff competition in the pace department including a couple of all-rounder options, it is highly likely that Ngidi might have to warm the bench yet again in the upcoming season. 3. Gujarat Titans- Noor Ahmad Emerging Afghan left-arm spinner Noor Ahmad was hired by the Gujarat Titans at the last year’s mega auction at his base price of INR 30 lakh and was one of the retentions of the franchise for the 2023 season. GT decided to retain Ahmad despite him not getting a chance in the last season due to some stiff competition in the spin department including the likes of his senior Afghan teammate Rashid Khan. However, it seems that the budding cricketer might once again be made to warm the bench in the 2023 season where Gujarat will be eyeing a successful title defence. 4. KKR- Litton Das Bangladesh batting sensation Litton Das was roped in for INR 50 lakh by the Kolkata Knight Riders which is nothing less than a steal buy considering the splendid touch that he has been in with the bat in T20Is recently. Even though Das has helped Bangladesh get off to brisk starts in the shortest format on many occasions especially the one against India in the T20 World Cup 2022 at the Adelaide Oval where he had scored a spectacular 60 runs off 27 balls, the Bangladesh batter might not get a chance in the middle-order or even the opening slot this time around. KKR could be sticking to Venkatesh Iyer and Narayan Jagadeesan as their opening combination and might look up to Afghan sensation Rahmanullah Gurbaz for wicketkeeping duties. 5. LSG- Kyle Mayers The next big thing in West Indies cricket Kyle Mayers was signed by the Lucknow Super Giants at his base price of INR 50 lakh and he has also been retained by the UP-based franchise for the upcoming edition of the marquee tournament. Mayers did not get a chance to prove his all-round abilities last time due to seasoned campaigners in the form of Marcus Stoinis, Jason Holder, Krunal Pandya, etc. The emerging Caribbean star might once again end up warming the bench due to an intense competition in the Lucknow side for IPL 2023. 6. Mumbai Indians- Jason Behrendorff Australian left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff was traded to Mumbai Indians by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the months leading up to the IPL 2023 mini-auction. He was bought by RCB for INR 75 lakh. The tall pacer could not make any impact last time due to a cut-throat competition in the RCB’s pace department that saw them make the Qualifier 2. Even this time, Jason Behrendorff could well be warming the bench as MI already have a quality pace attack with Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer sharing the new ball. 7. Punjab Kings- Sikandar Raza The Punjab Kings made a steal buy out of Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza for his base price of INR 50 lakh. The Pakistan-born cricketer has been one of Zimbabwe Cricket’s most accomplished players in white-ball cricket over the last few years and has also proved his mettle in overseas franchise leagues across the globe. However, with a good depth in the PBKS squad, it is highly unlikely that the engineer-turned-cricketer might get a chance in the upcoming season. 8. Royal Challengers Bangalore- David Willey England left-arm pacer David Willey was roped in by the Royal Challengers Bangalore at his base price of INR 2 crore at the IPL 2022 mega auction and even though he could not make much of an impact with the ball in hand, the Englishman has been retained by RCB for the 2023 season. The 32-year-old could only bag a solitary scalp in the four matches that he got to feature in the last season averaging 72 and an economy of 6.55. However, Willey might have to warm the bench this time around with the inclusion of his English teammate and left-arm speedster Reece Topley. 9. Sunrisers Hyderabad- Akeal Hosein West Indies left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 1 crore at the IPL 2023 mini-auction. Hosein has some amount of experience under his belt in the shortest format having bagged 25 scalps from 29 T20Is averaging 29.56 and also has an average of 22 with the bat. Hosein has been a consistent performer in the previous three editions of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and is on a roll in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 12 where he has taken 10 wickets from four matches for the Melbourne Renegades. However, with already plenty of depth this time around in the SRH camp, it is highly unlikely that Akeal Hosein might get a chance to shine. 10. Rajasthan Royals- Joe Root England Test great Joe Root was the Rajasthan Royals’ last minute signing at the IPL 2023 mini-auction. He was roped in for INR 1 crore in the accelerated auction. While Root has been enjoying a purple patch in red-ball cricket in the last couple of years, things have not been the same as far as the shortest format is concerned and his final T20I appearance happened to be way back in May 2019. Therefore, with the top and middle order spots of RR already occupied by key and consistent players for the 2023 season, Root might have to wait for a while to officially make his IPL debut.
