7 Instances when batter was timed out in cricket

Timed out is one of ten modes of dismissals in cricket. The Laws of Cricket mention this dismissal in Law 40 and Section 40.1.1 of the law states that “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.” International Cricket Council (ICC) also used to follow the same analogy in Tests but has changed the playing conditions from October 1, 2022. Now, the incoming batter would be required to be ready to take strike within two minutes in the longest format of the game. On the other hand, the threshold of 90 seconds in ODIs and T20Is has remained unchanged. Timed out is among the rarest of dismissals in the game and has never occurred in international cricket. However, the uncommon dismissal has happened on a few occasions in first-class cricket. Let us look at the instances when the batter has been timed out 7. Andrew Jordaan – Eastern Province v Transvaal at Port Elizabeth in 1988 During the Howa Bowl game between Eastern Province and Transvaal in February 1988, Transvaal won the toss and elected to field. However, most of the play on Day 1 was washed out and Andrew Jordaan who was one of the opening batters for Eastern Province, was 0 not out at the end of the close of play. Jordan was expected to resume his innings the next day. However, due to heavy rain overnight, the road conditions were quite miserable and the opening batter could not reach the ground on time and was timed out. With this, he became the first-ever cricketer to be dismissed timed out. Eastern Province were bowled out for 132 and Transvaal in response scored 152. Jordan got to bat in the second innings scoring 21 runs with his side posting 163. The game ended in a draw with Transvaal at 66 for 6 chasing the target of 144. 6. Hemulal Yadav – Tripura v Orissa at Cuttack in 1997 Tripura and Orrisa were locking horns in a first-class game in December 1997. Orissa courtesy of PM Mullick’s sensational double ton (201 runs) and skipper SS Raul’s blistering century (139 runs) and posted a daunting total of 521 runs on the board. In a rain-affected game, Tripura in reply lost their ninth wicket at 235 runs and the umpires called for a drinks break. The play was set to resume at 10.33 AM and Hemulal Yadav was the next player for Tripura to come in. It was the final day of the match and the batting team had to buy out time. However, Yadav was in a deep conversation with his team manager at the edge of the boundary when play was due to restart and made no effort to go to the crease. When Yadav exceeded the time, the fielders appealed to which the umpire gave the incoming batter out. Hemulal’s irresponsible act meant Tripura's first innings came to an end early and they could not avoid the follow-on. However, Rajarshi Chaudhuri and Satrajit Lahiri held the fort in the second innings and saved the match for their team. 5. Vasbert Drakes – Border v Free State at East London in 2002 In September 2002, Border were taking on Free State in a SuperSport series game in East London. Border won the toss and elected to bat. West Indies fast bowler Vasbert Drakes was to feature in the game for Pieter Strydom & Co. Drakes had completed playing the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 in Sri Lanka and was to travel from Colombo to East London by flight. However, his plane was delayed and even though the speedster was pushed lower and lower in the batting order, he was not able to make it on time. As a result, he got timed out while still on the plane. Border were bowled out for 172 and Free State in reply posted a huge total of 349. Drakes took two wickets for Pieter Strydom & Co. However, his side was sent packing for 136 in the second innings and lost the match by an innings and 41 runs. 4. AJ Harris – Nottinghamshire v Durham UCCE at Nottingham in 2003 Nottinghamshire were battling it out with Durham at the University Centres of Cricketing Excellence series at Nottingham in April 2003. After electing to bat, Durham were bundled out for a modest score of 165. Nottinghamshire dominated things with the bat as well courtesy of the twin centuries from captain Jason Gallian (126 runs) and Bilal Shafayat (105 runs). They were 444 for 3 with Shafayat at the crease. Andrew Harris team’s number 11 had suffered a groin strain and did not get changed thinking he would not be needed to bat. However, Jason Gallian & Co. suffered a mini-collapse and the score stood at 542 for 9 with Chris Read (94*) in touching distance for a ton. The 49-year-old tried to get to the pitch in time but could not. He was timed out and Read unfortunately missed out on a well-deserved century. However, Nottinghamshire went on to win the match as they bowled out Durham at 209 in the second innings. 3. Ryan Austin – Combined Campuses and Colleges vs Windward Islands at St. Vincent in 2014 Combined Campuses and Colleges were facing Windward Islands at the Regional four-day competition at St. Vincent. Steven Jacobs won the toss and elected to bat. Comb C&C rode on half-centuries from Kyle Corbin (79 runs) and Chadwick Walton (58 runs) and posted a competitive total of 225 in the first innings. Ryan Austin wreaked havoc with the ball taking an eight-wicket haul as Windward could only manage 157 runs batting first. However, the hero with the ball also grabbed headlines for a rather bizarre incident in the second innings as Austin failed to reach the crease in time and was given timed out. As a result, Comb C&C innings ended at a score of 115. Defending 184, Austin (3-37) and Jomel Warrican (5-34) ran through Windward’s batting order and won their team the match by 82 runs. The West Indies spinner was adjudged Player of the Match for his 11-wicket haul in the game. 2. Charles Kunje - Matabeleland Tuskers v Mountaineers at Bulawayo in 2017 In December 2017, Matabeleland Tuskers were locking horns with Mountaineers at the Logan Cup in Bulawayo. The Tuskers won the toss and elected to bat. However, Richmond Mutumbami & Co. were in a spot of bother losing five wickets at the score of 53. Charles Kunje was the next to bat and his team needed him to build a partnership with Mutumbami. But he was not able to reach the crease within three minutes and the umpire gave the right-hand batter timed out at the appeal of the fielding team. Matabeleland were bundled out for just 68. Mountaineers in response piled on a daunting score of 357. Kunje did bat in the second innings but could only manage to score 13 runs. His team posted 327 on the second occasion but went on to lose the match by 10 wickets. 1. Angelo Mathews - Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi Angelo Mathews. (Photo Source: X(Twitter) When Sri Lanka and Bangladesh locked horns with each other in match 38 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, Angelo Mathews became the seventh and most recent victim of timed-out in the cricketing history. Interestingly, this was the first instance Following Sadeera Samarawickrama’s dismissal in the 25th over, Mathews went into the middle to face the Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan, who was bowling the over. However, Mathews failed to take strike in two minutes due to some issues with his helmet, and taking advantage of the situation, Shakib appealed to the umpire against the veteran player. The umpire declared Mathews timed out, following which the Sri Lanka stalwart was seen angry, leaving the field. With this unfortunate dismissal, Mathews broke into the record books, becoming the first player to get timed-out in international cricket. Following the veteran all-rounder's dismissal, a lot of talks happened in the cricketing circle among the former greats of the game, wherein the spirit of cricket was questioned alike.
