When Sri Lanka and Bangladesh locked horns with each other in match 38 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, Angelo Mathews became the seventh and most recent victim of timed-out in the cricketing history. Interestingly, this was the first instance Following Sadeera Samarawickrama’s dismissal in the 25th over, Mathews went into the middle to face the Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan, who was bowling the over.

However, Mathews failed to take strike in two minutes due to some issues with his helmet, and taking advantage of the situation, Shakib appealed to the umpire against the veteran player. The umpire declared Mathews timed out, following which the Sri Lanka stalwart was seen angry, leaving the field.

With this unfortunate dismissal, Mathews broke into the record books, becoming the first player to get timed-out in international cricket. Following the veteran all-rounder's dismissal, a lot of talks happened in the cricketing circle among the former greats of the game, wherein the spirit of cricket was questioned alike.
