There was a lot of buzz about Shubman Gill's batting after he was appointed as India's Test skipper with the England series being his first leadership challenge. Batting at No. 4 for the first time in Tests, he left a strong impression at Headingley with a 147-run knock off 227 deliveries in his maiden innings as captain.

After a low score in the second innings, Gill bounced back in style and whacked a record-shattering 430-run aggregate (269 off 387 and 161 off 162) in the Edgbaston Test, as India drew level with a 336-run victory after having losing the first Test by five wickets. He suffered a slump in form with the next three innings, including the two low scores at Lord's. However, Gill made a roaring return and played an integral part in saving the Manchester Test by notching up 103 off 238.
