IPL 2024: 5 players to watch out for during MI vs GT matches

Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians (MI) struggled to play quality cricket under Rohit Sharma in the 2023 season. Witnessing the side’s underwhelming performance in the season, the MI team management took the tough call of replacing Rohit Sharma from captaincy with Hardik Pandya, who guided Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden title win in 2022. After Pandya’s exit, GT have appointed young Shubman Gill as their captain. Following the change of guard in both teams, eyes will be set on the game between Mumbai and Gujarat to be played on March 24, at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Ahead of the marquee clash between both teams, it’s essential to know some names who are the favourites to shine at the iconic venue. Here are five players to watch out for during MI vs GT matches: 5. Rohit Sharma Rohit Sharma. In the last six months, he has batted with an aggressive approach which has helped him against several bowlers. Playing his last T20 International (T20I) against Afghanistan, he hit a magnificent ton and recorded his best score in the format. Earlier, he looked stunning with the bat in the 2023 World Cup, notching up 597 runs in 11 matches at a notable strike rate of 125.94. Against GT in Ahmedabad, he will look to play an effective knock and deliver a fierce start to the side. 4. Rashid Khan Rashid Khan. He has done a magnificent job for his side in the last two seasons and noting his reputation, Gujarat supporters will keep their expectations high from him. The Afghan stalwart hasn’t played any competitive match since 2023 and the GT team management will want him to make a spectacular return. In the 2023 World Cup, he was the most successful bowler for Afghanistan, with 11 wickets in nine matches at an economy of 4.48. The leg-break bowler has taken 46 wickets in 33 IPL matches since 2022, when his association with GT started. 3. Shubman Gill Shubman Gill. The 24-year-old will be expected to continue his last year’s excellent work for Gujarat. In GT’s fine campaign, the right-handed opener had racked up 890 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate of 157.80 with three tons and four fifties. Nehal Wadhera Nehal Wadhera : Twitter In the last season, Nehal Wadhera made an impressive debut for MI, scoring 241 runs in 14 games at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 145.18. Along with Tilak Varma, he also displayed his excellence and won the confidence of the team. This year, he will look to deliver better numbers with his bat. In the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Trophy (SMAT), the left-handed batter looked confident for Punjab. Showing up in seven games, he hit 175 runs in six innings at an average of 58.33 and a strike rate of 162.03. Noting his power-hitting potential, MI might provide him the task to bat in the lower-middle-order with Tim David and deliver match-concluding knocks to the side. 1. Jasprit Bumrah Jasprit Bumrah.
