Legendary Indian captain and former head coach, Rahul Dravid’s IPL career witnessed the evolution of a classical Test batter adapting to the demands of the T20 format. When the IPL began in 2008, Dravid entered the tournament as one of the league’s Icon Players, representing his home team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). As an icon, he was not part of the auction and was the face of the franchise.

In that inaugural season, Dravid played 14 matches and scored 371 runs at an average of 28.53, including an unbeaten 75, which is his highest IPL score. His first three seasons (2008 to 2010) with RCB were steady years, where he played the role of an anchor in a team full of power-hitters. Although RCB did not achieve big results in those early seasons, Dravid’s batting remained consistent, and he fulfilled his responsibility as the senior-most batter.

In the 2011 IPL mega auction, he was listed as a marquee player, but RCB chose not to bid for him. For a moment, it appeared he might go unsold. However, the Rajasthan Royals secured him, beginning a long association that became one of the most respected player-franchise relationships in IPL history.

With the Royals, Dravid not only batted but also took on a bigger role as captain, mentor, and part of the management group. Rajasthan was known as a Moneyball team, operating with a smaller budget compared to teams like CSK and MI, and Dravid was central to this data-driven approach. He played 46 matches for the Royals overall, scoring 1,276 runs at a strike rate of 110.

Dravid’s final IPL season in 2013 was also his most complete one as a leader. He played 18 matches, scored 471 runs at an average of 29.43, and hit four half-centuries. His strike rate of 110.82 was lower than many modern T20 batters. Rajasthan Royals finished third that season, qualifying for the Champions League, one of their best performances after the inaugural title in 2008. As a captain, he promoted young players and made clinical decisions based on situations.

Sachin Tendulkar's IPL Journey: First Season vs Last Season

Comparing his first and last seasons shows how Dravid changed his T20 game. In 2008, he was adjusting to a new format, playing as a traditional top-order anchor for RCB. By 2013, he was not only scoring more runs but doing so while carrying the responsibility of captaincy and team-building at Rajasthan Royals. His strike rate remained decent, but his value was in creating a structure where others could flourish.
