'A true teammate, friend and an absolute powerhouse' - Rishabh Pant pens heartfelt note for Nicholas Pooran after international retirement
"Proud to have shared the field with you," an emotional Rishabh Pant posted on social media after Nicholas Pooran announced his retirement from international cricket.
Nicholas Pooran dropped a bombshell in the wee hours of Tuesday, June 10, as he announced his decision to retire from international cricket at the age of 29. The former West Indies captained called time on his career with the West Indies after playing 61 ODIs and 106 T20Is. He also led the team in 17 ODIs and 23 T20Is. Pooran scored 4258 runs across the two white-ball formats.
Pooran formed a great bond with Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant while playing for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. While Pant joined LSG at the IPL 2025 mega auction and was later appointed as the captain, Pooran has been associated with the franchise since 2023. There are several similarities between the two cricketers. Both are generally laid-back, like to take the attack to the bowlers, and hit big sixes. Also, they are wicketkeepers who bat left-handed.
After Pooran's retirement call, Pant took to his official Instagram handle to express his affection for the Trinidad-born and congratulated him for his contributions to West Indies cricket. Pant also wished Pooran good luck for his future endeavours.
"You've made your mark, bro - a true teammate, friend and an absolute powerhouse. Proud to have shared the field with you. Congrats on everything you have done for West Indies cricket. Wishing you nothing but success for the road ahead. Respect always," said Pant on Instagram.
Pooran to captain MI New York after Int'l retirement
Pooran had a spectacular season for LSG in IPL 2025. He was in the race for the Orange Cap for a considerable amount of time before Sai Sudharsan went into overdrive. Nonetheless, Pooran was one of the best batters of the tournament, finishing with 524 runs in 14 matches at an average of 43.67 and a strike rate of 196.25. This was the first time he scored more than 500 runs in an IPL season. He is set to return to action this week during the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025, where he has been named as the captain of the MI New York franchise.
