'He will do wonders for us' - Adil Rashid backs Harry Brook as England's new skipper
"We all believe he can be the leader and captain of the ODIs and T20s," Adil Rashid said about newly-appointed England white-ball captain Harry Brook.
Adil Rashid has backed the newly-appointed white-ball captain of England Harry Brook to excel in the role. The latter replaced Jos Buttler, who stepped down following England's disappointing Champions Trophy campaign earlier this year.
Brook has led England in an interim capacity in five ODIs. The Three Lions played a five-match series against Australia at home last year. While they went down 2-3, Brook impressed with the bat, finishing as the highest run-getter, amassing 312 runs from five games at an average of 78 and a strike rate of 127.86.
While the experienced Rashid said that mastering the art of captaincy doesn't happen overnight, he believes that Brook is ready to take the challenge.
"I am sure he is ready, but when someone takes over the captaincy, it's not an overnight thing. He has got time, he has done well so far with what he's done. I am sure he will be a very good leader, and going forward, he will do wonders for England cricket," Rashid was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
Rashid said that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have a lot of faith in Brook's abilities, and so do other English cricketers. The leg-spinner is hopeful about Brook being able to balance the two white-ball formats and lead England to success in ICC events.
"It is a big task, it is a big thing, but they gave it to him because they believe he can be the one. We all believe he can be the leader and captain of the ODIs and T20s. It will be tricky (to balance), but I'm sure he has got the capability, the mindset, the hunger, and the drive to do that and lead England to wins and World Cups," Rashid opined.
Rashid is eagerly waiting for his opportunity to play under Brook and work alongside head coach Brendon McCullum to bring England success. The 37-year-old has his sights set on the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
"It is a new era, with a new captain and new faces as well. Baz McCullum coming in, this will be his first time coaching at home as England white-ball head coach. It's an exciting challenge, and I'm looking forward to that. The next assignment we have got is the 2026 World Cup. We are building towards that and making sure when we get to that stage, we are ready," Rashid stated.
England are all set to face the West Indies in three ODIs, followed by as many T20Is in May-June. The first ODI is set to take place in Birmingham on May 29.
