Rohit Sharma calls Suryakumar Yadav catch as 'the moment' of 2024 T20 World Cup final

Former T20I skipper of the Indian team, Rohit Sharma, reminisced 'the moment' of the 2024 T20 World Cup final a year post the iconic seven-run win against South Africa in Barbados. The victory ensured Rohit won his first-ever ICC title as captain, which was also his second T20 World Cup triumph of his international career.

According to Rohit, the unforgettable event was the spectacular catch which Suryakumar Yadav took of David Miller at the long-off fence. Rohit narrated how tense of a moment that particular passage of play was for him and the entire team.    

"Even after [the catch], the umpires sent it up to the third umpire, and it was being checked whether Surya caught the ball or not, and everyone's hearts were in their mouths. I thought it had gone [for a six]. Because I was at [long-on], I was standing opposite Surya. I was already thinking '10 needed off five balls', but then I saw that it's coming to Surya," shared Rohit while speaking to JioHotstar during the throwback celebration of the iconic trophy win.

He also recounted his sentiments and a snippet of the conversation with Suryakumar while anxiously waiting for the final decision to appear on the big screen.

"I was standing with Surya when they were checking the catch and I told him, 'You only tell me [if it was a catch or not], I don't want to look [at the big screen]. Suryakumar's response was, 'No-no, I caught it.' But then I saw him on the side telling someone, 'Maybe, I don't know. But I caught it'. And then they showed the camera zooming in, and when the ball or feet touch the boundary rope, it moves, but nothing happened. So, we were a little happy. But unless it comes on the board, you never know what the third umpire is thinking," narrated Rohit.

Although Rohit did not contribute much with the bat in the summit clash, he was instrumental in playing a huge role to India winning the silverware. Rohit emerged as the leading run-scorer for the nation (257 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 156.70) in that edition, only behind Rahmanullah Gurbaz's tally of 281 runs by 24 runs.
