Shreyas Iyer didn't get the credit for the IPL victory last season: Sunil Gavaskar
Shreyas becomes the first IPL skipper to lead three different franchises to the playoffs.
Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer has been one of the talks of the season as he has led the team to the playoffs for the third time in IPL history. The Mumbai batter has not only performed with the bat but has proved his calibre as a leader once again.
This makes Iyer the only captain to take three different franchise teams to the playoffs, namely Delhi Capitals in 2020 and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. Former India legend Sunil Gavaskar went on to take a subtle jab at Gautam Gambhir, mentioning that the 30-year-old Mumbai batter did not get enough credit for leading the KKR team to their third title last year as most of it was given to Gambhir who came in as a mentor for KKR last year.
“He didn't get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It's the captain who plays a major role in what's happening in the middle and not someone sitting in the dugout. See, this year he's getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to Ricky Ponting," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
Iyer’s performance in 2025 and overall captaincy record
Shreyas Iyer is currently among the top run-getters for PBKS, scoring 435 runs in 12 games at an average of 48.33 and a strike rate of 174.69. He has four half-centuries to his name with a highest score of 97* against the Gujarat Titans in their opening game.
Speaking of his overall captaincy record, he has led an IPL franchise 82 times, winning 46 and losing 32 matches. Two games ended in a tie while two ended without a result. This gives him a win rate of 56.09%.
