As the first Test between England and India heads into the fifth day at Headingley, pacer Josh Tongue has shown confidence in his side's chances of pulling off the win. Chasing 371, England finished Day 4 on 21 without loss, with 350 runs needed and all ten wickets in hand.

India reached their second innings score of 364, thanks to KL Rahul’s 137 and Rishabh Pant’s historic twin century of the game. But under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, England have made a habit of going for the win despite the big totals. Of their last 36 Tests under Stokes, only one, the rain-hit Ashes clash at Old Trafford, has ended in a draw. The English pacer revealed the team's mindset for the chase.

"[We will] just go for the win. That's the clear message in the changing room. It's just [about being as positive as we can. They're going to bowl well at times tomorrow: it's just crucial we soak up that bit of pressure and reapply it. I don't see why we can't chase that down," he said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

The visitors' innings on Day 4 was anchored by the Rahul-Pant partnership of 195 runs. Pant, after reaching his second century of the match, became only the second wicketkeeper in Test history to do so after Andy Flower. Rahul hammered his third century in English conditions.

Getting through that first 30-45 minutes tomorrow is going to be crucial: Tongue

Meanwhile, Tongue’s spell with the second new ball dismantled India’s lower-order. He picked three wickets in four deliveries, triggering a collapse similar to that of the first innings. The Shubman Gill-led side fell short by 40-50 runs of their desired target. England’s openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett played the remaining six overs safely, putting 21 runs on the board. According to Tongue, surviving that early morning phase will be important.

"If you look at our batting line-up, it's very strong. We play a positive brand of cricket. Chasing 371 is going to be a good thing for us to do tomorrow. Getting through that first 30-45 minutes tomorrow is going to be crucial, and then hopefully [we will] get the winning runs," Tongue added.
