ENG-W vs IND-W 2025: Smriti Mandhana's maiden T20I ton, Shree Charani's four-fer powers India to massive win
Charani's maiden T20I game turned out to be a spectacular outing for the youngster.
India Women registered a 97-run victory against England Women at Trent Bridge in the first T20I of the ongoing five-match series. It was a completely dominating performance by the visitors who secure a vital lead going into the second game.
India were off to a positive start after being sent in to bat first with Smriti Mandhana scoring 31 of the 47 runs scored by the end of the powerplay. The standby skipper got to her 31st T20I fifty in the eighth over itself. An over earlier, Sophie Ecclestone's first over had been dispatched for 19 runs. On the other end, Shafali Verma, who could never get going, was dismissed for 20 off 22.
India got to 98/1 at the end of 10 overs. By that point, even Harleen Deol had gotten set at the crease. Alice Capsey almost had Harleen in her second over. However, a dolly dropped by Danni Wyatt-Hodge granted her a second chance. Ecclestone came back to bowl her second over in the 14th over of the innings. However, she could still not contain the flow of runs.
Smriti's 14th four brought up her maiden T20I ton, off just 51 deliveries. Harleen departed for a well-made 43 off 23 in the same over with Lauren Bell securing her first wicket of the day. Bell (3/27 in four overs) finished her spell with a couple of more wickets in the form of Richa Ghosh (12 off six) and Jemimah Rodrigues (zero off two). Mandhana (112 off 62) was dismissed in the final over of the innings.
India were off to a flying start with the ball. They managed to dismiss Sophia Dunkley (seven off four) and Wyatt-Hodge (zero off three) within the first seven balls of the run-chase. Tammy Beaumont (10 off 11) was the third English batter to fall by the end of the first six overs. Skipper, Nat Sciver-Brunt, had got to 37 by the completion of the sixth over.
Shree Charani, who had bowled her first over in the powerplay, left England in further trouble on bagging the wicket of Alice Capsey (five off six) in her second over. Sciver-Brunt was three shy of her fifty at the halfway mark. However, a colossal 133 runs were required off the final 10 overs. Ecclestone's day turned from bad to worse after she was out after scoring only one run off four balls.
It was only a matter of time from that juncture though. England Women collapsed in the overs to come. Charani ended up securing a four-wicket haul to her name. Her third and fourth wickets were that of Sciver-Brunt (66 off 42) and Bell (two off four). These two were the final couple of wickets to fall as India registered a mighty impressive win.
