ENG vs IND 2025: Yashasvi Jaiswal within touching distance of breaking Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag's record
The second Test of the ongoing series is scheduled to get underway on Wednesday, July 2.
Yashasvi Jaiswal stands on the brink of attaining a major feat as he could become the fastest Indian to 2000-run mark in terms of innings in Test cricket. The record currently is jointly held by former Indian greats Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag. Dravid and Sehwag reached the landmark in 40 innings each.
Jaiswal, who is currently representing India in the ongoing five-match Test series against England, has a realistic chance of getting there in 39 innings. The 39th innings of his will be the first for India in the upcoming game.
Fastest Indian cricketers to 2000 Test runs:
Player | Opposition | Venue | Year | Innings |
Rahul Dravid | New Zealand | Hamilton | 1999 | 40 |
Virender Sehwag | Australia | Chennai | 2001 | 40 |
Vijay Hazare | West Indies | Port of Spain | 1953 | 43 |
Gautam Gambhir | New Zealand | Napier | 2009 | 43 |
Sunil Gavaskar | West Indies | Port of Spain | 1976 | 44 |
The left-handed batter has an opportunity of setting a new precedent in the second Test of the series to be played at Edgbaston, a venue at which India have lost seven out of the eight Tests they have played so far. The conditions are expected to be more bowling-friendly than usual, which will pose a certain challenge for Jaiswal & Co.
The series opener for Jaiswal was a mixed bag. He was one of the three centurions from his side in their first innings at Headingley. However, he fell for four in India's second innings as a short of a good length delivery from Brydon Carse nipped away and took his outside edge through to the keeper.
Ex-IND coach defends Jaiswal after fielding blunders
The Shubman Gill-led side ended up losing the game by five wickets as England chased down 371 with relative ease. Jaiswal, however, had an outing to forget in the field. He dropped as many as four catches across the match to drop the joint-most number of opportunities by an Indian cricketer in a Test match.
