England vs India, 2018: 5th Test, Day 5 – Statistical Highlights

India ended up losing the final Test match as expected at the start of day’s play but didn’t go down without a fight for one last time. India put themselves into a position of having a realistic chance of chasing down the record score into the final session. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant’s counter-attacking knocks helped India to add 204 runs for the 6th wicket after they were five down for 121. However, the duo fell in the space of three overs and England capitalized it to run through the lower-order.

All the major stats and numbers that were recorded during the final day of the Test series:

2 – Sam Curran is only the 2nd player to score 250+ runs and take 10+ wickets in a Test series before turning 21. Kapil Dev scored 329 runs and took 17 wickets in the 6-match home series against West Indies in 1978/79. Curran began this series two months after turning 20 while Kapil Dev came into that series a month before his 20th birthday.

2/3 – India’s total of 2/3 is the 2nd lowest from where a pair shared a century stand for the 4th wicket. KL Rahul added 118 for the 4th wicket with Ajinkya Rahane coming in at 2/3. Clive Lloyd and Larry Homes shared 237 against India in the 1983 Port of Spain Test after they were three down for one run.

2 – Ravindra Jadeja scored 99 runs and seven wickets in this Test match despite ending on the losing. Kapil Dev is the only Indian before Jadeja to have scored as many as 99 runs and take as many as seven wickets in a losing Test. The former Indian captain made 130 runs and bagged eight wickets in the 1982 Lord’s Test match against England.

3 – Hanuma Vihari became only the 3rd Indian to score a fifty and bag a duck on Test debut. Gundappa Viswanath against Australia in the 1969 Kanpur Test and Devang Gandhi against New Zealand in 1999 Mohali Test joined the list.

6 – Indian innings is only the 6th time where two players got centuries in 4th innings of a losing Test. The last of the previous five was recorded by Australia against England in the 1981 Manchester Test.

149 – KL Rahul’s 149-run knock is the 2nd highest 4th innings score by an Indian behind Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 in 1979 also against England at The Oval itself.

204 – The partnership of 204 runs between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant is the 2nd highest 6th wicket stand in 4th innings of a Test. Justin Langer and Adam Gilchrist shared a 238-run stand in the 1999 Hobart Test against Pakistan which was the only other 200-run stand for the 6th and lower wicket in 4th innings.

204 – The 204-run stand between Rahul and Pant is India’s 2nd highest 4th innings partnership for any wicket. Chetan Chauhan and Sunil Gavaskar shared a 213-run opening stand at this very venue in 1979.

564 – James Anderson is now the most prolific wicket-taker among pace bowlers by surpassing Glenn McGrath’s tally of 563 wickets. He is the also the 4th highest wicket-taker in this history of Test cricket.
