This was perhaps the biggest aspect about the current India-Windies Test series that kept the fans interested. And teenage sensation Prithvi Shaw did not disappoint them as he slammed a fast ton against the Caribbeans in his debut Test, keeping consistency with hitting tons in his Ranji and Duleep debut matches. The 18-year-old became the youngest Indian to score a century on debut; the fourth youngest overall and the second youngest opener to hit a ton.

Shaw made his debut as the 293rd Test player for India though it was his second series. He was picked up for the final two Tests against England in the overseas series that concluded last month but did not get a game. Hanuma Vihari, the other player who was picked along with Shaw, made his debut at the Kennington Oval.

Fantastic achievement, says former speedster Zaheer Khan

The wait was for just a month though as Shaw made full use of the opportunity he got at home. Former cricketers came up with high praises for the Mumbai youngster and of them was Zaheer Khan. The 39-year-old former left-arm speedster tweeted saying Shaw had a “fantastic achievement” and he showed a “good temperament and positive approach”.

Shaw completed his century at a better-than-a-ball rate and put up 206 runs with his partner Cheteshwar Pujara who fell for 86. Another opener KL Rahul fell for naught in the very first over. The right-hand batsman, who became the 15th Indian to score a Test hundred on debut, hit 17 boundaries in his innings at the time of writing this report. India were scoring at a brisk pace and could be in a very strong position at stumps on Day 1 itself.

Shaw got his chance to open for India after veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan got axed for the current series. India have picked a number of new players for the series in a quest to build up a team for the long run.
