GT vs RR : What will happen if IPL 2022 Qualifier 1 is washed out?
GT will qualify for the final match if the result is not possible due to rain.
After the completion of group stage matches, the table-toppers Gujarat Titans (GT) will take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Qualifier 1 of the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, to be played at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata on May 24 (Tuesday). The new entrants have put on a great show and have qualified for the playoffs in their debut season. Meanwhile, Rajasthan qualified for the playoffs first time since 2018.
However, there is a strong possibility for the rain to interrupt the match as Kolkata is experiencing rain and thunderstorm for the past couple of days. According to AccuWeather, thunderstorms are expected during the afternoon and evening. There are around 65% chances of rain and it is expected to play a spoilsport. So, the question now arises that what will happen if rain washes out the Qualifier 1 on Tuesday.
At least two hours of rain is expected in Kolkata
The iconic Eden Gardens has a quality drainage system and the Cricket Association Bengal (CAB) has already got the entire ground covered. things might not work if a thunderstorm strikes. A total of two hours of rain is expected in Kolkata today.
However, there are few options available to find out the winner, if the rain plays a spoilsport. According to IPL guidelines, “The number of overs in the playoff match may, if necessary, be reduced so that each side has the opportunity to bat for five overs. For the Eliminator and each Qualifier playoff matches, if it is not possible to schedule a five-over match to complete by the end of the extra time on an original day, the teams will, if conditions permit, play a Super Over to determine the winner of the relevant Eliminator or Qualifier match.”
“If the Super Over is not possible the team that finished highest in the league table after the 70 matches of the regular season shall be declared the winner of the relevant play-off match or final.”
