Hotstar creates record with 18.6 million concurrent viewership in IPL 2019 final
Also in the same IPL, Hotstar breached the previous global landmark of 12.7 million concurrency viewership.
The Mumbai Indians (MI) created history on Sunday by winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) title for the record fourth time. In a tense final, they beat the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by one run to continue their domination over Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side. Meanwhile, another record was also made off the field related to the IPL and it was on the live-streaming platform for the season. Hotstar created a history for concurrent viewership, yet again.
During the 19th over of the CSK innings when they required 18 runs off 12 balls, a record 18.6 million concurrent viewers were hooked on to the platform. The oscillating fate of the game made it hard for the viewers to switch to anything else and eventually they saw some brilliant death-overs bowling from the MI that helped them prevail over the opponents eventually. Jasprit Bumrah was adjudged the man of the match in the final for taking 2 wickets for 14 runs.
Numbers went up as Shane Watson stood firm
The final match saw an impressive 8-12 million concurrent viewers for the most part of the action. The numbers went up adding as Shane Watson (80 off 59 balls) was giving glimpses of pulling off yet another show like he did in the 2018 final when the CSK beat Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The audience number went on adding and it reached 16 million mark by the 17th over. It then touched the 18.6 million mark before falling back to 18.3 million concurrent viewers in the final over that saw Watson getting run out with the CSK needing just four.
“The engineering of Hotstar has been taken in-house and it keeps on setting new records for concurrent viewers for a live event. Clearly, chief product officer Varun Narang is doing something right,” InsideSport said in a report.
Also in the same IPL, Hotstar breached the previous global landmark of 12.7 million concurrency viewership during the game between the Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 28. The platform garnered 267 million audience figure within three weeks of the league.
