England came into their match versus India under a bit of pressure. However, Eoin Morgan’s men didn’t allow the situation to get them on their knees. Rather, the Brits came out firing on all cylinders and took down India by 31 runs at the Edgbaston in Birmingham to take themselves one step closer to the semis. As far as Virat Kohli’s men are concerned, they aren’t yet in hot waters, because of their decent run in the tournament

On a fresh strip, the hosts’ decision to bat first paid dividends as they ended up scoring 337 in their 50 overs. The Brits got off to an awe-inspiring start courtesy of Jason Roy (66) and Jonny Bairstow’s (111) 160-run stand that came off 22.1 overs. India used all their five bowlers to separate the duo and it was Kuldeep Yadav, who gave his team the breather, dismissing Roy. But Bairstow went on to notch his maiden World Cup ton off 90 balls.

He fell prey to a mistimed cut off Mohammed Shami, who also got rid of the Morgan, the English skipper. Joe Root meandered along to 44 off 54 before becoming Shami’s third victim. But yet again it was Ben Stokes, who rose to the occasion with a 54-ball 79 and propelled the Three Lions’ score. For India, Shami continued his good run of form with a five-wicket haul. Speedster Jasprit Bumrah was stupendous as well, giving away only 44 in 10 overs.

A bridge too far for India

Chris Woakes dismissed KL Rahul for a duck to push India on the backfoot. Thereafter, Rohit Sharma (102) and Virat Kohli (66) put their heads down and built a partnership of 138 off 155 balls. Kohli again fell short of a century and gave his wicket away to Liam Plunkett. Rohit looked ominous, having scored his third century of this tournament, but Woakes nipped him out. Rishabh Pant tried hard for his 32 before falling prey to Plunkett.

The onus was then on Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni to pull off the incredible chase for the Men in Blue with the required rate over 10. Just when their stand was threatening to flourish, Plunkett picked up his third wicket in the form of Pandya, who got a 33-ball 45. Dhoni pulled out some blows to stay unbeaten on 42 off 31, but his efforts weren’t enough to take India past the finishing line. With the defeat, India’s unbeaten streak also came to an end.
