The highly anticipated mega auctions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) went underway earlier today in Bengaluru as the franchises looked set to set their squads up for the new season. The franchises went all guns blazing in a bid to procure the cricketers of their desired choice which saw some bidding wars and big money-spending.

However, much to the surprise of the fans and pundits alike, some of the IPL heavyweights went unsold in the auctions. The most surprising amongst them was Chris Gayle who failed to attract a single bid. Gayle had recently lit up the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) by scoring two sensational centuries in the knockouts but contradictory to his performance, the swashbuckling opener was forced to the unsold players’ basket.

Lasith Malinga was another highest-profile cricketer who went unsold on day one of the IPL 2018 auction. Gayle had set his base price at INR 2 crore while Malinga was to be traded from INR 1 crore. Although both the numbers were breached several times in the sale of other players during the day, the duo failed to garner any bids for themselves. Moreover, these two unsold players also hold the distinction of being the leading run-scorer in T20 cricket and the leading wicket-taker in the IPL.

England skipper Joe Root, who fancied his maiden IPL outing, also went unsold. Even the likes of Murali Vijay, James Faulkner and Hashim Amla couldn’t attract any bids from any of the eight franchises. Former Australian spearhead Mitchell Johnson, who was a part of the Mumbai Indians franchise also failed to make the cut.

Soon enough, haters started criticizing him for not being able to get selected in the IPL. The charismatic all-rounder then hit back hard by tweeting his about his merry and happy times that he’s enjoying in company with his family.

However, the only silver lining for all of them is that the unsold players can be called back into the auction on day two if requested by any franchise.
