IPL 2020: 4 players CSK could have bought instead of retaining Kedar Jadhav

Despite playing 14 matches for the three-time winners last season, 34-year-old Jadhav managed just 162 runs at an average of 18.00.

Hanuma Vihari is a kind of batsman Chennai Super Kings need in the middle-order to score runs as well as to stabilize the innings thereby relieving a bit of pressure on Suresh Raina and skipper MS Dhoni. With two key middle-order batsmen Ambati Rayudu and Kedar Jadhav proving ineffective last season, MS Dhoni’s men could have gone for a player like Hanuma Vihari who has domestic as well as international experience.

It is unfortunate that a batsman like Vihari couldn’t attract bids at the auction despite being ‘technically sound’. The 25-year-old who began his IPL career with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013 did not have a memorable stint with the Orange Army managing 280 runs in 22 appearances across two seasons. After missing out on an IPL contract in the next three seasons (2016-2018), the Kakinada-born batsman was bought by Delhi Capitals for INR 2 crore at 2019 IPL auction.

Unfortunately, he made just two appearances for Delhi throughout season twelve in which he scored four runs. At INR 50 lakh it would have been a bargain buy for CSK given his batting credentials and useful off-spin bowling. Though he has 26 First-class, 20 List A and 22 T20 wickets, his only IPL wicket so far is considered very special- that of Chris Gayle back in season six.
