IPL 2020: 5 Players with base price of more than Rs 1 crore who might go unsold

The IPL auction is just around the corner and thus, it’s no surprise that the buzz around the Indian T20 league is back. A little over a fortnight ago, all the eight teams released a player list which consisted of the players retained. The trading window was done and dusted as well. Now, the player list for the auction has been released. As many as 971 players, including 258 overseas stars have registered for the upcoming player auction. However, out of those, only 73 slots will be filled up. While the big news has been Mitchell Starc and Joe Root opting out of the IPL, there are other big stars who have put themselves in top base prices bracket. The likes of Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Chris Lynn, Dale Steyn are among the many who put themselves under the INR 2 crore bracket. Meanwhile, the likes of Robin Uthappa, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Chris Morris are among the ones who put themselves in the INR 1.5 crore bracket. There are quite a few more in these two top brackets but may well go unsold. It was against England in an ODI at Southampton that the tall, lanky fast bowler got his maiden Australia cap. However, as the years have gone by, Hazlewood has turned into a red-ball specialist and now, he doesn’t even play the other formats in international cricket. In fact, T20 is his weakest link. While he is still decent in the 50-over version, the shortest format doesn’t suit the New South Wales lad. Hazlewood has played just seven T20Is for Australia and 30 T20s in all. Moreover, his last T20 appearance was back in the World T20 in 2016. Hence, with Hazlewood not playing much T20 and white-ball cricket in general over the last few years, he is unlikely to attract any bid in the upcoming auction. He went unsold even in the 2018 edition when his base price was the same – INR 2 crore. The high base price will also be a factor that could go against him. Angelo Mathews Angelo Mathews. The Sri Lankan all-rounder is a utility player and can produce vital contributions in all departments. He played for three teams across six seasons before eventually falling off the radar. Mathews who played 49 IPL games has been struggling with a few injuries in the recent past. Moreover, he’s had his constant issues with the Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) as well. He is even bowling a lot lesser these days in order to remain injury-free which reduces his effectiveness. Thus, Mathews may have a good record and is a big-match player. But there are quite a few flaws and it may make a difference. Teams will want to opt for a fresher, fitter and younger players in the same bracket over the likes of Mathews. Shaun Marsh Shaun Marsh. While he was consistently scoring in the Australian domestic circuit, it was the inaugural season of the competition that proved to be the launchpad. In 2008, Marsh smashed 616 runs at an average of 68.44 playing for the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). He even won the Orange Cap. Over these last 11 years, the left-handed Western Australian has been constantly in and out of the Australian side. The same has been the case in the IPL as well. He’s stuck with KXIP but hasn’t featured in all games despite having a very good record. In 71 IPL games, Marsh has scored 2477 runs at an average of 39.95. However, his form has dipped in the recent past. Moreover, he’s been unsold for two seasons in a row and might not attract bids this time around either. Chris Woakes Chris Woakes & Virat Kohli. (Photo Source: Twitter) Chris Woakes may be a pretty surprising name on this list. There may be an argument looking at his T20 record. He picks up at least one wicket per T20 game and with the bat, has a strike-rate of 136.10. Moreover, he is a pretty experienced cricketer. However, Woakes has a dismal IPL record. In 2017, he had a decent time with the ball. He picked up 17 wickets from 13 games despite being slightly expensive as he played for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). But in 2018, Woakes travelled the distance when he was with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) who bought him for a sum of INR 7.4 crore. He had an economy of 10.24 and was dropped after five games. Moreover, he hasn’t contributed a lot with the bat either. His base price is pretty high as well which may also be a big factor during the auction. In 2010, he played for the first time in the league featuring for the Deccan Chargers while he represented Australia in October 2011. The pace-bowling all-rounder has also been constantly in and out of the Australian national side (across formats) in recent times. Marsh last played a T20 game in February earlier this year. Moreover, he is pretty injury-prone as well. The Western Australian all-rounder has been dealing with quite a few injury issues. He even broke down in the 2016 edition of the IPL. That was just his fourth season in the Indian T20 league. Moreover, INR 2 crore is too high a base price for anyone to bid at the start. Most teams will want to invest in Indian all-rounders and also, Indian finishers down the order. Hence, the younger Marsh is one of the players from the top bracket who can go unsold.
