IPL 2022: Best overseas XI from the league stage

Over the years, the overseas players have shown great interest to be a part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to the presence of the best T20 players and its competitiveness. Moreover, they have turned up to understand the subcontinent conditions, which is favorable for the future prospects of the respective national teams. This year, the cricket fans felt the absence of Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers, who took the tournament to another level with their six-hitting abilities. However, some of the usual exploits continued their fine form for their new teams, while the others recovered their form and proved their merit. With T20 World Cup scheduled later in the year, this season saw record participation from the overseas players. This list includes most of the players, who have been part of the tournament for the last few years, and were the match-winners for their respective teams. Best Overseas XI after the completion of the IPL 2022 league stage: 1. David Warner David Warner. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The Australian top-order batter David Warner was dropped from the SRH team in the last edition, due to his ineffective strike rate. Ahead of the 2022 auction, the team management did not retain his services. It was Delhi Capitals (DC), who showed interest in Warner due to his terrific track record in the tournament. Joining the team late, he could score only four of 12 balls in his first appearance against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). But, he returned in a fine fashion by scoring 61 off 45 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), which secured a fine momentum for him. In the next two games, he returned with knocks of 66 and 60* and was a key force at the top order. Warner’s whirlwind knock of 92* off 58 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was a highlight of this season. The knock of 52* against Rajasthan Royals (RR) helped the team to maintain their hopes for the playoffs. In 12 matches, he garnered 432 runs at an average of 48. 2. Jos Buttler Jos Buttler. (Photo Source: Twitter/BCCI) One of the finest players to don the jersey of Royals, Jos Buttler has been terrific with his consistent scores in the last few editions of the IPL. He was one of the three retained players by the franchise for the 2022 season. He started this season with 35 off 28 against SRH and followed it up with a century against his former franchise, MI. In the third appearance against RCB, Buttler delivered a knock of 70 off 47 balls. The next three knocks read as 54, 103, and 116, and became the Orange Cap holder by a fair margin. Apart from the knock of 67, his form slumped in the latter half of the season. Buttler’s recent three scores in the league stages were 2,2, and 7, which is disappointing for a player of his caliber. However, he still has the orange cap with 629 runs at an average of 48.38. The Englishman will serve as the key player for the Royals in the playoffs. 3. Quinton de Kock (wk) Quinton de Kock. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock was the consistent run-scorer for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the last few editions and helped them to secure title victory as well. He was bought by LSG for the 2022 season and returned with a knock of seven in the first league match against Titans. However, he made a strong comeback against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to score 61 off 45 balls. Quinton’s next few knocks saw him providing contributions of 30-40 runs. In a match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), he scored 50 off 29 balls to set up a clinical victory for the team. However, his form in the next two league matches was the reason for the team’s loss. In the last league game, the Protea batter was sensational with his knock of 140* off 70 balls, comprising 10 fours and 10 sixes, which helped the team to seal the playoffs spot. After the completion of the league stage, he has 502 runs in 14 matches at an average of 38.62. 4. Faf du Plessis Faf du Plessis. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The second-highest run-scorer of the last edition with 633 runs, Faf du Plessis was not retained by his franchise, CSK for the 2022 edition. Instead, he was chosen as the leader of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise. In his first knock, Faf delivered a terrific knock of 88 off 57 balls, with seven sixes. However, he was inconsistent with his starts in the next few games. His knock of 96 off 64 against LSG helped the team to win the game by 18 runs. In the next notable knock of 73* against Sunrisers, he was at the crease for the entire duration of 20 overs. In the last three games, Faf scored 127 runs and was one of the key contributors to taking the team to the playoffs. After the league stage, he has 443 runs at an average of 34.08 and will be vital for RCB’s maiden victory. 5. Liam Livingstone Liam Livingstone. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The Englishman Liam Livingstone has been one of the finest players in the shortest format of the game. Ahead of this season, he had scored runs in almost all the leagues, apart from the IPL. In his first two games for Punjab Kings (PBKS), he could not convert his starts but returned with a knock of 60 off 32 balls against CSK. He returned with knocks of 64 off 27 against Titans, and 60 off 33 balls against Sunrisers (SRH). In the SRH game, he hit the longest six of this season of 118 metres. Most parts of the second half saw him contributing around 20-3o runs. Livingstone hit 66 off 29 balls against RCB to help the team in winning by 54 runs, which maintained the team’s hopes for the playoffs. Although the team lost their playoffs spot, he hit 49* off 22 balls in the last league stage to finish in a fine fashion. In 14 matches, the 28-year smacked 437 runs. 6. Shimron Hetmyer Shimron Hetmyer. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The Caribbean batter Shimron Hetmyer was consistent in the Delhi Capitals (DC) middle order for the last few editions but missed out on the retentions. The Royals availed his services to bolster their batting department in the 2022 season. In his first three knocks, Hetmyer returned with knocks of 32* off 13, and 35 * off 14 and established himself as the finisher of the team. Thereafter, he delivered knocks of 42* off 31 balls and 59* off 36 balls. The performances of the 25-year-old helped the Royals team to win the crunch moments and gain further momentum in the tournament. In the second half, his form dipped, and could not provide hefty contributions. However, in the last three league matches, he scored 64 runs and will be a key player for the team in the playoffs. In 12 matches, Hetmyer has 297 runs at a strike rate of 163.19. 7. Andre Russell Andre Russell. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Another Caribbean player, who has made his name in T20 cricket is due to his performances in the IPL. Andre Russell was one of the four retained players of the KKR team for the 2022 season. His form in the next two league games was average, but he returned with a knock of 70* off 31 balls against PBKS, to set up a fine season for him. With a knock of 40+ runs against Sunrisers and Titans, he emerged as the match-winner for the team and had returned with figures of 4/5 in the latter game as well. In the latter half of the season, Russell looked confident in his abilities and contributed in both departments of the game. Although he could not help the team to seal the playoffs spot, the 33-year-old smashed 335 runs and took 17 wickets in the season. He certainly was the best performing all-rounder for the Knight Riders and will look to continue his fine performance in the next season. 8. Rashid Khan Rashid Khan. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) It came as a surprise, when the Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan was not retained by his former franchise, SRH. However, he was picked by the Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of this season’s auction. In the first few games, he was economical and put the brakes on the opposition. In this season, he finally contributed with the bat and won a couple of games for the team. In a game against CSK, he led the team and scored 40 off 21 balls. Thereafter, he was terrific against Sunrisers hitting sixes in a consistent manner, which further extended the batting department of the team. Rashid’s best figures of 4/24 came against LSG, which paved way for the team to seal the top spot in the points table. With 91 runs and 18 wickets in the league stage, he has been terrific for the Titans and is a key player in the coming years. 9. Kagiso Rabada Kagiso Rabada. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Kagiso Rabada has been an impressive performer in crunch moments across all the formats. In the last few editions, he was terrific for the Capitals but missed out on the retentions. The PBKS team management picked him up for the 2022 season. The first few games saw him giving 25-30 runs and taking an odd wicket, but had improved his performance with the new ball. The CSK game saw him finishing with 2/23, which enhanced his confidence. In the next two games, he took four wickets each and gradually became the best pacer in the tournament. In the last three league games, Rabada took a total of five wickets and maintained a fine economy as well. Although the team could not get to the playoffs, the Protea pacer will serve as a lethal weapon in the next few editions. 10. Wanindu Hasaranga Wanindu Hasaranga. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Wanindu Hasaranga could appear in only two games of the last edition for RCB. However, he returned as the leading wicket-taker for the Sri Lanka team in T20 World Cup 2021, and the management again trusted his abilities. In the first few games of this season, he bowled well and returned with economical figures. The performances gradually came against Royals and Titans, where he finished with figures of 2/23 and 2/28 respectively. In a game against Sunrisers, he was at the best of his abilities to take 5/18, which bamboozled the opposition. In the last two games, the 24-year-old took three wickets and played a key role to take the team to the playoffs. With 24 wickets in 14 games, Hasaranga is the second-highest wicket-taker of the tournament and has finally performed well in the IPL. 11. Josh Hazlewood Josh Hazlewood. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood has been a fantastic pacer for the Australian team across all the formats. After doing well for CSK in 2021 and T20 World Cup 2021, he was bought by RCB to include experience in their pace attack. He arrived a little later in the tournament and picked a single wicket in his debut match against CSK. In the next two games, he took 3/28 and 4/25 and was already the best overseas pacer in the tournament, and helped the team to secure crucial victories. However, Hazlewood was rather inconsistent with his performances in the second half, as he took crucial wickets in some games, but went for plenty in some of them. So far, he has 15 wickets in 10 games at an economy of 8.08 and would look to better his performances in the playoffs.
