The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) decimated the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by a mammoth 75 runs in a one-sided contest in Match 53 of IPL 2022 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on May 7. By the virtue of this win, Lucknow has succeeded in dethroning Gujarat Titans from the top spot with eight wins from 11 games and 16 points to their tally with a superior net run rate of 0.703.

Kolkata skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first. The move paid off initially when he ran out his opposite number, KL Rahul, out for a diamond duck in the very first over. Quinton de Kock and Deepak Hooda then carried out the rescue act with a 71-run stand for the second wicket. While De Kock scored 50 runs from 29 deliveries, Hooda contributed with a 27-ball 41 as LSG posted a challenging total of 176/7.

KKR lose momentum in their chase against LSG

In reply, KKR were never really there in the contest right from the beginning and were reduced to 25/4 in the seventh over. The middle-order duo of Andre Russell and Rinku Singh did try to do the unthinkable from thereon as they added 44 runs for the fifth wicket stand. However, the fightback just did not prove to be good enough in the end.

Once Russell was dismissed for a quickfire 19-ball 45, his West Indies teammate Sunil Narine played a cameo knock of 22 runs off 12 balls. In the end, the two-time winners were bundled out for 101 in the 15th over. Avesh Khan picked three wickets for LSG while conceding at a stunning 6.30 and was declared the player of the match.

Losing skipper, Shreyas Iyer said:

They outplayed us in both the departments – batting and bowling. We got off to a bad start in the powerplay and also we leaked a lot of runs in the death overs. We couldn’t read how it (the pitch) was going to play, and based on that we elected bowling. I thought we could have restricted them to 155-160. They got to a really nice total in the end. We (Myself and McCullum) discuss about chasing, we have this conversation every now and then. I have won a lot of tosses, but it would have been good if I lost those tosses. We are not able to capitalize on the small things. In the middle overs we have been bowling amazing, just that we need to do well in the powerplay and in the death overs. We need to assess that and bounce back. In the next three games, we need to do that.

Winning skipper, KL Rahul said:

Played really well, started well with the bat, except for the run out. Was a tricky wicket. Knew it was going to be slow and sticky. Had to get around 150-160. The way Quinton and Deepak batted, made it look easy. Big hitting from Stoinis and Jason gave the momentum. We started superbly with the ball, put the ball in the right areas, couldn’t have asked for more. Trust them a great deal (his pace battery). Having skill is one thing, but knowing what to do when is important. They’ve been put under pressure a couple of times but they’ve stuck to their strengths and been brave with the ball. That’s all we can ask for. Keep trusting what the best ball is on that wicket. Dre Russ going like that is scary at times. We do have some plans before the game, and what’s good to see is they remember those plans under pressure. If we go for runs from there then that’s acceptable. Still can’t think of any game where we’ve had a complete performance. Still areas to improve. Don’t think any team is going to be perfect anyway, we aren’t chasing that. Every one wants to contribute which is great to see. Don’t know if we’re peaking at the right time but we’re getting the wins, we’re doing what is expected of us, sticking to our plans.

Player of the Match, Avesh Khan said:

Goal was to get him out (Russell). Had a chat with Rahul, the talk was that if I get hit for six off a hard length ball, I’ll still back it. Have seen him get out to that length. He’s one player who can singlehandedly win the game. My dad always motivates me, even the coaches here, and Gautam and Rahul. Role is to take wickets and win games. The last four matches we’ve bowled second, so we have an idea of the pitch.
