IPL 2022: Rating performances of teams in the third week

After the completion of the third week of the Indian Premier League 2022, several teams have improved their performances, while the ones prevailing in the previous week have slipped in the points table rankings. The Gujarat Titans (GT) have bagged the topmost position in the table, with a total of four wins in five appearances. On the other hand, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) did a turnaround to secure three consecutive victories after two losses, all coming in the third week. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) finally managed to open their account this week, while things have worsened for Mumbai Indians (MI) with no wins so far. On the other hand, the strong Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lost both their fixtures after impressing in the first couple of weeks. The Delhi Capitals (DC) secured a big victory, and the teams like Rajasthan Royals (RR), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had an average outing in the third week. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The most successful franchise in the tournament’s history, MI have been disappointing with their performances in all departments of the game. Although the team has tried well with the bat, the bowlers have been a major letdown and have kept the team away from securing a victory. In the third week, the team featured in two league matches. In their first league fixture against RCB, they posted a total of 151, but could not defend the score. The team got a positive start with Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma contributing 20+ runs, while Suryakumar remained unbeaten on 68 off 37 balls. In the bowling unit, Jaydev Unadkat and Dewald Brevis picked a single wicket each. In the second league match, they faced Punjab Kings and delivered their best performance with the bat by managing to score 186, falling short by 12 runs. The team’s key contributors with the bat were Dewald Brevis and Suryakumar Yadav with 40+ runs. The bowlers were again average, with Basil Thampi emerging as the pick of the bowler with two wickets at an economy of 11.8. 9. Kolkata Knight Riders – 6.5/10 Kolkata Knight Riders. In both matches, they could not deliver with the ball and had inconsistent performances in the batting department. The team’s experienced players have not looked in fine touch, which is one of the key reasons for their downfall from first to the fourth position. In the first league match, they gave away 200+ runs against DC and lost by a margin of 44 runs. The Caribbean all-rounder Sunil Narine finished with figures of 2/21 off four overs. The top run-scorer for the team was Shreyas Iyer with a knock of 54 off 33 balls. In the second fixture, Knight Riders did well to post a total of 175, with contributions of around 50 runs from Nitish Rana and Andre Russell. However, the team’s bowling woes continued in this fixture as well, as they failed to defend their score. The team’s most successful bowler was Russell with figures of 2/20 off two overs. 8. Chennai Super Kings – 7/10 Chennai Super Kings team. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) It was an average week for the Super Kings with a single win in two league matches, but they will be happy to get two crucial points to get their campaign back on track. The batters have delivered for the team, while the bowlers still have scope for improvement. They are at ninth position in the points table with one win in five matches. In their first appearance, they faced the Sunrisers and posted a total of 154, with the top contribution of 48 from Moeen Ali. In response, the opposition managed to secure an easy victory over them due to the defensive mindset of the CSK bowlers. The likes of Mukesh Choudhary and Dwayne Bravo picked up one wicket each. In their second league match against RCB, Shivam Dube and Robin Uthappa scored 95* and 88 respectively to steer the team to a strong total of 216. In response, the opposition tried well but the spinners Maheesh Theekshana and Ravindra Jadeja kept picking regular wickets to secure the first victory for the team. 7. Lucknow Super Giants – 7.5/10 Lucknow Super Giants. However, the team had a few positives as well, which would keep them upbeat ahead of the next fixture. They are positioned fifth in the points table with three wins in five appearances. In the bowling unit, Dushmantha Chameera was clinical with his performance to finish with figures of 0/22. The all-rounder Jason Holder was expensive, giving away 50 runs and picking two wickets. The best performer in the bowling unit was Krishnappa Gowtham with the figures of 2/30 off four overs. The team welcomed the Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis against the Royals, who smashed 38* off 17 balls to keep them in the hunt in a chase of 166. The other notable contribution of 39 off 32 balls came from Quinton de Kock. The likes of Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya contributed 20+ runs. 6. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 7.5/10 Royal Challengers Bangalore team. The team certainly felt the absence of Harshal Patel in the second fixture, who had left the bio-bubble due to personal reasons. They are at sixth position in the points table with three wins in five fixtures. In the first league match against MI, they bowled well to contain the opposition to a score of 151, which is a below-par total at all the venues in this tournament. The likes of Harshal and Wanindu Hasaranga picked up two wickets each. In the batting department, Anuj Rawat contributed 66, while Kohli scored 48. In the second fixture against CSK, the team went for 200+ runs in an average bowling effort, with Hasaranga again emerging as a key performer with two wickets. In the batting department, the top three batters could not provide a good start for the team. But, players like Glenn Maxwell, Suyash Prabhudesai, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Dinesh Karthik provided hefty contributions to get the team close to the opposition score but fell short by 23 runs. 5. Rajasthan Royals – 8/10 Rajasthan Royals. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The Royals came to the top position in the points table after securing a victory in the first fixture of the third week. However, they slipped to second after facing a loss in the second one. Overall, the team has been impressive but has to improve their death bowling and the middle-order needs to be consistent with their performances. In the first fixture against Super Giants, they posted a total of 165 runs, with Shimron Hetmyer scoring 59 off 36 balls. It was a terrific effort from Trent Boult to take two wickets in the first over, while Yuzvendra Chahal picked up four wickets, and debutant Kuldeep Sen kept his calm in the last over to help the team secure a victory by three runs. In the second league match against the Titans, the team was without Boult, and thereby the opposition managed to score 192. In response, the Royals started in a strong fashion with Jos Buttler contributing 54 off 24 balls. In the middle-order, Hetmyer tried hard with 29 off 17 balls but the team lost by 37 runs. 4. Punjab Kings – 8.5/10 Punjab Kings. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) PBKS are in the third position with three wins in five appearances in the tournament. They finally secured a much-needed victory after the heroics of Rahul Tewatia caused them a major upset in the last week. The team has used an attacking mindset in their favour, and is expected to play with the same template. In their only appearance in the third week against MI, they were terrific with their batting performance to post a score of 198, with openers Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan providing a good start by hitting half-centuries. In the middle-order, Jitesh Sharma provided a late flourish with 30 off 15 balls. In the bowling unit, Caribbean all-rounder Odean Smith finished with figures of 4/30 off three overs. With three wickets in the final over, he will certainly feel confident after sealing the game for the team. The next notable performance came from Kagiso Rabada, where he gave away 29 runs and picked two wickets. 3. Gujarat Titans – 8.5/10 Gujarat Titans. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The Titans have been top-notch with their performances in both departments of the game. In five games, they have four wins and are at top of the table. The team featured in two matches and secured victory in one of them. The reason for them being in the third position in this ranking is due to their dominating performance in the second fixture of the third week. In the first fixture, they scored 162 with contributions of 50 and 35 from Hardik Pandya and Abhinav Manohar respectively. In the bowling unit, Lockie Ferguson and Mohammed Shami had a bad day. The wicket-takers were Pandya and Rashid Khan with one dismissal each. In the second league match, they delivered a clinical performance against the Royals and would look to replicate the same performances in the upcoming fixtures. They posted 192 with a sensational 87* from Pandya, and 43 from Manohar, while Miller contributed a quickfire 31*. In the bowling unit, Ferguson and Yash Dayal picked up three wickets each. 2. Delhi Capitals – 9/10 Delhi Capitals. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) DC featured in a single match, but it was enough for them to be in the second position in this ranking. However, they are in the eighth position in the points table after the completion of the third week. This win would keep them confident in their abilities ahead of the next fixture. They posted a total of 215 with contributions of 51 and 61 from Prithvi Shaw and David Warner, while Rishabh Pant scored 27. In the final overs, Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur again provided a terrific finish with quickfire 20+ contributions. In the bowling unit, the fast bowlers Mustafizur Rahman and Khaleel Ahmed started well, with the latter finishing with figures of 3/25 as well. But, the Player of the Match, Kuldeep Yadav continued his form with 4/35 off four overs, while Thakur also took two wickets. 1. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 9.5/10 Sunrisers Hyderabad. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Undoubtedly, SRH are the best team in the third week of the tournament, topping this ranking due to their three consecutive victories. They are holding the seventh position with three wins in five league matches. It all started in the league fixture against CSK, where they chased down the target of 155 in 17.4 overs, with a contribution of 75 from Abhishek Sharma, and two wickets each from Washington Sundar and T Natarajan. In the second fixture, they faced the Titans and handed them their first loss of the tournament. They bowled well to keep them around 160, with Natarajan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar picking two wickets each. In response, Abhishek Sharma, Williamson, and Pooran did well to help the team in chasing down the score. In the latest fixture against the Knight Riders, Natarajan and Malik were the key bowlers with three and two dismissals respectively. Although the opposition had posted 175, the confident batting unit chased it down with 2.1 overs to spare. The likes of Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram contributed 71 and 68* respectively.
